Pros: Great sound. Attractive. Tough. Great user support groups. Audible support.
Cons: Battery cost and lifetime
The Bottom Line: The Rio 800 is attractive, tough, and has good sound quality. Price bargains can be found but the model is becoming obsolete.

| chertzler's Full Review: Rio 800 (128 MB) MP3 Player |
The RIO 800 is an evolution of the strong line of MP3 players begun by Diamond. After the RIO line was purchased by Sonic Blue the firm inexplicably released several players that, arguably, were inferior to the old RIO 500. The RIO 800 offered a return to segment leadership for the RIO line due to high quality sound (>90 db), attractive styling, and a very nice display. The biggest problem with the RIO 800 is that it still uses the proprietary backpack for batteries and expansion memory. These backpacks are expensive, inconvenient, and will become a real problem in the future as newer RIO's no longer rely on backpacks. As an example, a 32 meg backpack will probably cost you about $40.00 and will contain a rechargeable battery that lasts about 3 hours (not the 11 hours claimed by RIO -- do not believe the on-screen lifetime estimate).
