| theheidis's Full Review: Sony SDM-M81 18 inch LCD Monitor |
I'm always pretty quick on buying the latest technology...but it took me a while to decide on getting a flat panel monitor. But when I decided to get a new computer, the idea of a flat panel started sounding good
I'm a big fan of Sony. I have many Sony products, and not one of them have failed me yet. I even bought a Sony Vaio computer...so I was leaning toward a Sony monitor as well. A 15" would have been adequate, but once you see one of these 18" LCD's, it's hard to settle for a 15".
In case you're interested in the specifics of this monitor, I'll quickly go over them:
Viewable screen size: 18.1"
Max resolution: 1280 X 1024
Dot Pitch: 0.28mm
Vertical Freq: 48-85Hz
Horizontal Freq: 28-92kHz
Contrast Ratio: 300:1
Appearance: This black monitor is very stylish and looks great on my desk. It has an anti-glare coating and the picture looks great too! I wasn't able to find any "dead" pixels at all.
You Can Hook up 2 Computers to it! When I got my new Sony Vaio computer, I didn't want to get rid of my old computer...so as I was reading some Epinions on LCD monitors, I found out that this monitor would allow you to hook up 2 computers to it - and with a touch of a button I can go back and forth between computers...I love this feature!
Speakers: The speakers are very tinny and sound terrible if you're trying to play music. But they work out great for me -- having 2 computers hooked up to it -- because it allows me to have speakers on both computers, without having 2 sets of speakers on my desk. I use the monitor speakers for the older computer I use less often, and I'm glad to have them...because it's helpful sometimes to be able to hear the audio on a file, etc.
I'm not big into technical specifications and such, I only wanted to put my review out here because, and because I wanted to share with you my personal opinion on this product. Going from a 17" CRT monitor (15½ viewable space) to this 18.1" viewable space LCD has been a little bit of an adjustment. At first, the LCD seemed to bright, so I adjusted it...and at startup the display jumps a little bit...but other then getting use to it, and having to make a few adjustments I'm very happy with it.
It does cost a lot to go to an 18" LCD, especially the Sony...They are offering a $100 rebate on it right now, and I found it at zones.com for 899.00 (so 799.00 after rebate). *NOTE: Be sure if you are searching around the for the best deal & you're counting on the Sony rebate that you buy it from a qualified dealer...only some websites that sell this monitor are on the list of qualified dealers you'll need to purchase from in order to qualify for the rebate. (zones.com is one of them)
15" LCD's are as low as 299.00 these days, making it easier and easier for people to switch to a light weight, space saving flat panel monitor vs. those heavy CRT's. If you can afford this one, it's really a great monitor.
