techguy137's Full Review: Richard Branson, Virgin King : Inside Richard Bran...
Richard Branson is on par with Bill Gates and other self made entrepreneur billionaires of or time, which was unbeknownst to me as an American before I read this book.
Branson's story is really interesting and worth reading. I was captivated by his sense of adventure and how he fused that with a dedicated business oriented life to rise above his competitors. His true genius stems from charisma and boundless motivation.
It was surprising all the near misses he's had and some of the blunders, but Virgin has risen above it and primarily due to his leadership. This is a great book about a modern business success story and an enjoyable book to read.
This book outlines Branson’s beginnings with a small mail order record company in 1969, his first Virgin Records signing of Mike Oldfield, who had the psychedelic hit “Tubular Bells”, on through the wild 70’s with the Sex Pistols and others, an airline, a Cola company, balloon flights, boat races and more. Since the book was written in 1994, it does not cover the fate of the Cola company or the current state of the airline or Virgin’s most recent ventures into cellular telephone, but you get a feel by reading about Branson that if this book were written yesterday you would still miss some important events for Branson and Virgin during press time.
Tim Jaskson, the author, is a financial columnist for FT and other finance papers so he writes in a clear and concise manner that is both enjoyable to read and informative without boring you to tears. This is not an authorized biography of Branson or history of Virgin, so it holds no punches. Although, I found Jackson’s the depiction of Branson and Virgin refreshingly honest and fair. This book is not designed to stir up a scandal so you will buy the book ‘everyone is talking about,’ but rather it tells “an entertaining story into the rise and rise of Richard Branson . . . a fast-moving story” as reviewed by Time Out.
