tracmd's Full Review: Calming Non Talc Powder 2.5oz
When I was purchasing baby basics for my newborn daughter, I decided to buy a can of California Baby Non-Talc Powder. My mom had said that it is always good to have baby powder around, so I figured I'd follow her advice. I picked up a can at the local Whole Foods for around $11. This was extremely expensive to me, for the can is small at only 2.5 oz. However, having tried other California Baby products and having been happy with them, I took a chance that the can would be worth it.
Why did I opt for a "Non-Talc" powder?
Talc powder, which was commonly used when I was a child, is considered a potentially risky ingredient today. According to the Cancer Prevention Coalition's website, talc is a mineral which has fibers within it that are similar to asbestos. Asbestos (which can sometimes be found in siding preceding the mid to late 1970's, for example) is a known carcinogen.
According to the CPC site, "Talc particles have been shown to cause tumors in the ovaries and lungs of cancer victims." Another particularly disturbing statement by the CPC on their site is that infants can die or become severely injured from inhaling talc powder. Now, this is only one site's information. However, the CPC site is not the only site that lists the dangers of Talc. A simple Google search brings up loads of links detailing the hazards with Talc use.
As a risk adverse individual, I don't need to be hit over the head. In other words, as soon as I got wind of the potential dangers of Talc, I knew that I would be steering clear.
Why did I choose California Baby's Non-Talc Powder?
As I mentioned earlier, I had been a fan of California Baby before trying the powder. Therefore, I had some confidence in the brand. In addition, I found the information on the canister appealing. According to the label, the powder has a "Calming" scent, utilizing an essential oil blend. It contains anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.
I liked that it is a short list of ingredients, and that I don't see a seemingly endless list of chemicals that I don't understand.
When should you use this powder, and what is it like?
According to the label, this powder is great for preventing diaper rash, soothing chafing, and to help irritated skin. I use this on my daughter when she gets perspired, particularly in her diaper area and on her belly. I sprinkle it on her and rub it into her skin in the creases in her groin area (where there is chafing and moisture), and on her lower abdomen. I also sometimes put it on her rear end. I tend to use it if her skin simply appears irritated or perspired as I mentioned. The powder has a nice light sweet smell, is white, and goes on very smooth.
According to the label, the directions are:
At each diaper change, sprinkle lightly to absorb moisture and refresh skin before applying our Diaper Rash or Calendula Creams. To soothe chafing and irritated skin, sprinkle liberally on affected areas. Parents and older children can apply to underarms and between the toes. When the weather turns humid, give the back, arms, and legs a light dusting for a silky smooth cooling effect.
Results
When I apply this powder to my daughter, her skin feels very silky and smooth. My daughter also really likes how it feels when it is applied. She always smiles, for I think it is soothing on her. I find that it keeps her skin nice and dry where applied, and helps prevent irritation, particularly on warm days. I personally have never tried the powder on myself as the directions suggest. However, considering the positive results on my daughter, I wouldn't hesitate to try the powder on myself.
Summary
Though I am not pleased with the high price of the California Baby Calming Non-Talc Powder, I am extremely pleased with the results. It helps keep my daughter's skin dry and clear. In addition, my daughter seems to really enjoy it when this powder is put on her. Finally, I like that it is a safe alternative to Talc. Despite the price, this powder is an absolute keeper.
