| Magick1's Full Review: Playmobil Pirate Island 4136 |
My daughter enjoys playing and she’s got a tremendously good imagination. She fell in love with pirates a couple of years ago after watching a movie called Tom & Jerry – Shiver Me Whiskers http://www.epinions.com/review/Tom_and_Jerry_Shiver_Me_Whiskers/content_331693788804 . Or, at least that’s when I think she fell in love with pirates. Well, her holiday list this past season, she had a Playmobil Pirate Island on her list of wanted items and she got it from her grandparents. She was in love!
The Product
This is a “super set” and comes with a lot of parts. The actual process of putting the pirate island together was not terribly bad. I think we were able to take it out of the box, follow the instructions and we had a great little pirate island to play with, in about 20 minutes. That is with a little helper, trying to tie up some items like the anchor and a boom that will lift the heavy cannon off the beach to the cannon bracket on the shipwreck on the beach.
The contents of this box are many…there are 2 pirates, a parrot and some booty! There is a secret treasure hideaway on the shop. And, the cannon really shoots! The cannon has a little plunger type plastic rod that fits inside of the cannon and there is a trigger that shoots the cannon. The plunger has a soft plastic tip and it does not have a sharp tip. The cannon doesn’t make the resounding “boom”, but your little one will!
There are sea shells, a crown and a couple of swords, knives and a belt with little “bullets” that attach to the belt. The pirates have either a hat or a tied scarf that fits on their heads. The pirates’ legs and arms are moveable so you can put them into different positions.
The shark is pretty good sized and is made of a nice, softer plastic and has a moveable jaw to get a pirate or something else. There are many small parts to this super set and it really isn’t made for little kids, as they can swallow items easily. They recommend over 4 years old.
Putting the pieces together, I was impressed there were cords or strings available for hoisting in the anchor. And, the cord was available along with the pulleys to put together the boom, and these both work! You have a turnstile that turns and hoists up either the anchor or a turnstile to pull up the slack on the boom to lift items like the cannon. The boom does move so that you can lift something up from the left side of the ship and move it to the right side of the ship without too much effort.
The ship is roughly 12 inches long by 9 inches wide by 6 inches high. It doesn’t take up too much space. This is fairly easy to pull apart and store back in the box that it came in, and it takes just a few seconds to pull the boom off and lay everything in the box. The seashells and the bullets are the smallest items with the bullets being not much bigger than a piece of rice each, if that. The seashells are roughly the size around of a top of a small tack.
Overall Impressions
Imagination abounds with this pirate set. I don’t know how many times I have been chased by the shark, or the pirates have gotten scared by the loud “squawk” from the parrot and have fallen off the boat only to be chased by the shark. Amazing things have happened on this beach-bound pirate ship!
If you are looking for something to help provide imagination and creative play, this playset (and I am sure many other Playmobil playsets, will help little ones imagination along quite nicely. I like that they are battery free, quiet, and quick to put together (even with the small pieces that were in the kit).
If you like having toys that spark children and get them thinking and don’t require batteries or noise box covers, you might want to check this playset (and likely others) out. I think you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed ours.
