meowzebub's Full Review: Petmate Litter Locker Plus
I confess, I'm a litter avoider. I crave the day when my cats finally give up on me and start cleaning their own boxes. Until then I've spent countless dollars on litter "systems" that promise easy cleaning, no smell, world peace, etc. I've wasted tons of money on the Litter Maid Self Cleaning (Hah!) box, on pebble systems, on multiple filter trays sitting inside other multiple filter trays, etc. I finally settled on expensive disposable boxes. With two cats that won't share a box, this is costly - about $5.50 a week - and since the boxes aren't covered there is a lot of litter kicked outside the box. It also got to be kind of rank, but being a very lazy person at heart, I figured that since the average person stops noticing a smell after 10 minutes, I could learn to live with it. I liked the convenience of being able to simply toss each box at the end of a week and replacing it with a new one. Unfortunately, over the last month one of my cats - I don't know who, neither one will 'fess up - had decided that a weekly change just isn't enough and they began to leave me presents outside the box.
Now I've finally found a litter product that delivers EXACTLY what it promises. I read the other reviews at epinions on Litter Mate and, when I saw it at PetSmart for only 19.99 (cheaper than PetCo and DrsSmithandFoster.com), I decided to take another chance on a litter gadget. I bought the Litter Mate, a regular hooded box and clumping litter. I haven't regretted it for a moment. It was easy to set up, and as long as you can remember the difference between clockwise and counter clockwise, it is very easy to use. It takes seconds a day to scoop and dispose of the litter. Having the Litter Mate a few inches from the box makes cleaning a snap, so much so that I scoop the litter out one to two times daily. The litter has never been cleaner. I was so pleased with it that I went out and bought a second one for the other litter station. It really is easier to use than disposable pans.
You don't need to advance the storage bags each time you scoop. I find that I only need to close a bag and open a new one about once every two or three days. There is a lid to contain the smell until the receptacle is full and you advance to the next bag.
The only con is the commitment you must make to getting bag refills, but since I was already spending $5.50 a week on litter boxes, the 8.99 that the refills cost at PetSmart is much less than what I am used to paying.
