Pros: No emotional hype. Educates the "kind" on the bottom line methods of "takers".
Cons: Initial example is "extreme." Hang with it and it will become more familiar.
The Bottom Line: Ready to stop "hurting" and start "thinking?" The author's analytical approach used to "study" emotionally abusive people empowers the reader to think, detach, and move on... Finally.

| lee208's Full Review: People of the Lie : Vol 2. The Encounter with Evil... |
I was a little discouraged by the opening examples of evil the author chose to use from his counseling practice. They were very engaging, indeed. For this reason I continued to read, but just to see how the stories turned out. I began to change my expectation of the book from "self help" to "intrigue."
In these first chapters it appeared the author's experiences were too extreme to be able to glean any practical application for my own life. I am glad I continued, however. He introduced each story from the most extreme to the most subtle. He used the extreme examples given in the early chapters from which to draw parallels for the reader to better see the insidiousness of the evil in less obvious situations given in the middle chapters. These are the ones with which most readers will identify and where they will learn to see through the smoke screen of the "takers."
The author shares what he learned about toxically selfish people from his years as a psychotherapist to give the reader an "inside look" at the processes that go on in the mind of people who are willing to hurt others in an effort to keep themselves comfortable and the great "cover up" techniques they use to maintain an image of "goodness" to the watching world. He describes situations and people that fall at various places along this continuum from the absolutely evil to the typically selfish. The reader will find where their situation falls on that line and be able to gain tremendous wisdom from this reading.
Many are uncomfortable word "evil." If you can get past the author's use of this word you will find yourself disturbingly illuminated at the mastery with which these "takers" have used you in the past and be equipped with the tools to identify and protect yourself from people who are out for themselves... at your expense.
