| aashok's Full Review: Pelikan Headbanger EarSubs Stereo Earphone Earphon... |
WHAT IS IT & WHY DID I BUY IT?
Everyone has been on a flight where the person next to you is listening to their iPod or MP3 player, with open air headphones. And the whole aisle is subjected to a muffled but loud nonstop
.cha chu cha cha
.cha chu cha cha
Thats when I feel like lifting up and snapping the offending earphones on the offenders ear. Most (in the ear) earbuds are a viable solution, however they often lack the dynamic sound range (specifically the low end bass frequencies) and comfort of traditional over the ear headphones. So when I read some of the rave reviews for the EarSubs made by Headbanger Audio, I just had to try them out for myself. HeadBanger Audio sells the EarSubs in three models. One is a universal model for use with any audio source. The second model is specifically designed for use with iPods. And a third model designed for use with the PSP. I purchased the EarSubs specifically made for the iPod and the PSP for $20 each. HeadBanger also makes conventional over the ear headphones with similar enhanced bass technology.
WHATs IN THE BOX?
These are shipped in an almost impregnable blisterpack. I finally had it open after 10 minutes of jabbing and slicing at the pack with every sharp tool at my disposal. The package included the EarSubs with a built-in inline electronic amplifier (about the size of a quarter), and 2 pairs of soft rubber inserts (one large, and one small size). A very rudimentary instruction manual is also included.
WHATs HOT ?
SUPERIOR SOUND QUALITY:
Like most in the ear earbud earphones, the EarSubs have small drivers. However the EarSubs use two ways of enhancing bass and delivering rich sound. The first is an inline electronic amplifier that boosts the bass frequencies. The second is a Speed Chamber that extends into the ear. This uses the same principle as the Bose WaveGuide system to deliver enhanced bass from a small driver. The frequency response of the EarSubs ranges from a deep low end of 20Hz, to a high of 10kHz. This really brings out detailed sounds in movies and MP3 songs. For example: approximately two hours into Terminator-2 when Sarah Connor is shooting at the T1000 with a pump action shotgun, you can clearly hear the empty shells hitting the floor along with the loud shotgun blasts and background music. Also when the Terminator is dragging himself along the metal walkway, you can clearly hear his servos while the T1000 is kicking the crap out of him. Ive seen this movie numerous times, and have never noticed such small details in the soundscape. Also, the EarSubs can get very loud at times. So watch for the volume control, and listen at normal levels. Extended use at a high volume level can cause hearing loss.
COMFORTABLE:
During the course of a 2 hour movie, most headphones and ear buds can get quite uncomfortable bordering on the painful. To compensate for this, the EarSubs come with soft rubber inserts in two sizes (large and small). These slide over the Speed Chamber and sit inside the ear. The soft rubber makes the earbuds comfortable to wear and create a sound seal. The rubber inserts also prevent the earbuds from sliding out of the ear. This is great for using while on the treadmill or the gym. I found the large ones a bit too tight in my left ear. So I use the small insert in my left ear, and the large insert in my right ear. ***Thank you HeadBanger Audio, for letting me know that I have lopsided mismatched ear canals***
INEXPENSIVE:
These earbuds produce truly impressive sound. And at $20 a pair, you can use the savings to buy more songs on iTunes or PSP games.
WHATs NOT
The earbuds do not have markings to indicate for use in left or right ear.
THE BOTTOMLINE:
The HeadBanger EarSubs are by far the best sounding earbud headphones I have ever used. They reproduce excellent sound with rich deep bass. They are great for listening to MP3 songs, movies on an iPod, or playing games on a PSP. They are very comfortable during extended use, and a steal at $20 a pair. Buy them today, you will not be disappointed.
PS: Happy New Year to all my Eps peeps !!
