| jo.com's Full Review: Pacific Coast Pacific Coast Feather Down Around Pi... |
After sleeping on a Pacific Coast down pillow at my cousins house a few monthss ago, I finally decided to buy my own. I actually bought two Pacific Coast Feather DownAround Pillows.
About the pillow:
I bought it because it was so comfortable and is. Ill start by saying that if you like your head to sit on a flat surface, you will not like feather pillows. There are degrees of firmness but my general feeling from what I read is that the down makes the pillow soft even if it is firm. I was so tired of hard flat surfaces that never retained their shape and were uncomfortable. Pacific Coasts down lets your head sink into it. The pillow is literally as soft as feathers.
There was one main reason I chose this standard sized beside my experience with it. It states that it is allergy free. (They call it Hyperclean. "Hyperclean® materials have been washed up to eight times in cleaning agents developed exclusively for Pacific Coast Feather Company.) In fact it has an allergy free warranty that says dust, dirt and allergens have been removed. All my other pillows are covered in casings. It is recommended that these pillows be put into protectors as well. I havent had an allergic reaction to my down pillow.
The pillows came (I bought them online) with information about the pillows and company. We are told that these pillows have a Barrier Weave Most Leakproof Fabric" which is "the measure of how well a fabric will contain its down and feather fill and refrain from leaking. Leakproofness is measured in millimeters of mercury, like a barometer. The industry standard for leakproofness is 10MM, with lower numbers indicating more leakproofness. Our products leakproofness average 6.95MM.
The pillows have a 5-year warranty.
The thread count is 230. This is 75% down and 25% other feathers; there are 26 ounces of down in the pillows. We are told that it has a supportive natural feather core surrounded by a large pillow of down.
We are told that down pillows are best because they offer adjustable support in multiple and changing positions. I find that claim to be true. I find that whatever position I turn in the pillow moves with me. We are told the down pillow will help with the natural alignment of my back. I have read that your head should be aligned with your body. One day I woke up with an old pillow and my neck was tilted. I realized that couldnt be good!
It is also suggested that you not sleep on your stomach since it puts the most stress on your spine forcing your neck to be out of its natural alignment.
We are told that this will outlast a polyester pillow by 10-20 years. I will be happy if it lasts 3 years, I am so used to buying pillows constantly.
We are told that its construction is Unique Inner Chamber Design;" it has medium support and it is filled with 525 fill power down. You can find all you want about fill on the site but to give you an idea of what they are talking about I will quote a paragraph, The quality of down is determined by its fill power and cleanliness. Higher fill power indicates larger, stronger clusters from mature geese. The larger clusters have the power to fill more space with less weight. Large clusters loft higher, provide superior insulation, breathability and last years longer than the smaller more fragile down clusters found in many cheap or imported comforters. Fill power of 500-550 is good. Fill power of 575-650 is excellent and easily worth the additional investment. Fill power of 700 or more is extremely rare. The color (gray or white) and origin of the geese do not determine quality.
So this is the lower end, which I knew when I bought it but paying that much for a pillow was mind boggling to me so I started here. Perhaps I will go up in fill at some point but I am very happy with my pillow.
The standard size is 20 inches by 26 inches. It is available in queen, king, travel and children sizes as well.
This pillow can be washed and dried in regular machines with a mild detergent on a gentle setting. They should be washed about every 6 months to keep them fluffy.
My final thoughts:
I really love my down pillow. My husband loves his as well. It has made a difference in my comfort level and I wish I had bought it sooner. I think the Pacific Coast brand is excellent and I am very impressed with the literature that came with the pillow.
Online I paid $39.99 for each.
