rookshark's Full Review: Nike Air Pegasus Running Shoes for Men
I have listed a review of the 2005 regular edition Pegasus elsewhere on this site. Based on my delight with that shoe, I purchased this much more attractive offering last year.
As with the regular Pegasus, I planned to use this for running. The climafit feature of this shoe is not something I particularly needed since I do not live in a snowy or particularly rainy area, but I figured, what is the big deal, right? Same shoe, just a different upper right?
Wrong. These very nice looking black with red accent running shoes might look good, but they certainly do not feel good. Although the shoe itself proudly proclaims on the outsole full length Nike air the difference in the comfort and feel of the shoe was remarkable from when I first put them on my feet. They are not uncomfortable, but are nothing like the 2005 or 2006 regular series Pegasus I also have owned.
The shoe is stiff very stiff. I expected a little difference in this regard since these are ready for the worst elements around, but this was too much for me. I thought a longer break in period was all that it needed, but after repeatedly suffering through 50 miles or so, I gave up using these for regular running.
The comfort level as I already mentioned was not great. My feet did not hurt after using these for running (although a replacement insole was a must) but I certainly knew which shoes I had on every step of the way for sure. Using these shoes for casual use, if walking or working a great deal, my feet do get tired before in other shoes, even other Nike boots. Ugh.
Durability is as you would expect though, these are tough little buggers. The outsole is durable and has good grip, but even with not using them for hard core running, and not tremendous casual use, there is already wear shown on the outsole. They are not fading fast, but the wear is noticeable. The upper is hard core, and as such shows no issues. Ventilation is limited as being a climafit shoe, but my feet have never felt too hot or trapped.
The shoestrings used in this particular model are different as well. It might seem like nitpicking, but trying to lace these shoes up, and tightly at that, is not easy, nor fun, which just adds to the general feeling of something lacking in comfort during regular use.
These shoes might come alive with colder temps or more rain, but I doubt it. I can only imagine the cold would make them even stiffer. If you see these shoes and assume it is the same ol Pegasus but with just a different wrapper, think twice. If you need a shoe to walk to work or classes in the snow or rain, then these might be your thing, but I would avoid them for serious running.
