Wow, thank you, Nick and Rex! What wonderful comments. I am chagrined at Rex's comment that he expected a different review and have suspected it's kept people like EPLOVEJOY away. Anyway, I'm very glad this book review is getting more attention than it did first time out. Kudos to Rex for a great, great idea for a write-off.
Nick, you make me very envious!

Having just returned from an incredibly inspiring... (Reply to this comment)

...road trip through the splendor of Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon and Rocky Mountain National park, I can totally relate to staring at a mountain for a half hour and watching it change in front of one's eyes.
The beauty of life is the beauty of life. Period. And as you note, it's the role of the artist and the philosopher to remind us of that.
Excellent pick. Excellent review.

And here I thought (Reply to this comment)

this book would be a biography of MaryKay!
I identify greatly with several of your points, chief among them that we are preparing the next generation for technical prowess at the expense of metaphysical/spiritual fulfillment. Second most important is the observation that our religious institutions seem to also have their own agenda...
Well done, Jan, and a worthy entry in the re-writoff.

Thanks, Dave! I'm relieved that I'm not the only one impressed with the book. That quote was from what I wrote originally and it as well as the rest of the original review still holds true. I get more out of the book with each reading.

"This book's unqualified endorsement for the enjoyment of beauty in our lives confirms my passion for writing and inspires me to new depths of understanding" Now that's what I call a recommendation worthy of a read.
Great job
Dave :-)~~

How wonderful of you to say so, Rouchelle. It is the original indeed with a few additions of content, my favorite passage and the poem. I think the problem of disinterest lies in the title of the book. My original title was also boring - "Our Need for the Humanities."

Beautiful, And Splendid (Reply to this comment)
by LEDOMAINE
How sad appreciation and due acknowledgment had to come through a rewrite. If this is the contents of the original, how could only 2 of us recognize its beauty & its worth?
Perhaps, as you stated, "truth is recognized by the splendor of its beauty" --however, splendor as well as beauty must first be "recognized". I recognized it, here. Well done, Jan.
