| jajus100's Full Review: Marvins Magic Drawing Board |
I was browsing through some of the online profiles when I saw this toy listed under someone's dislikes. I had forgotten all about this ridiculous toy until then.
Basically, this toy is simply a board with a plastic film over it. The board is multi-colored. Between the colored board and the film is a black ink. In theory, you take the red stylus which is broad on one end and pointed on the other to move away the ink and reveal your beautiful colored lines and shapes. On the commercial, people were able to make a wonderful cat with a bow tie, a fish in the water, etc.
I had purchased this toy for my two boys who absolutely love their Magna Doodle and Wonder Doodle. I thought that this product would be great! It looked like it would be able to do what the Magna Doodle could do, but in color! What could be more fun! Well, what could be more of a disappointment. This toy is very difficult for a child to use. They had a difficult time pressing hard enough to move away the black ink.
I had only slightly more success than they did. I could make a line, but then when I made another line, it would force the black inky stuff inside to move over my previous line. It was virtually impossible to make a real picture. The most I could do was to make a few different "colored areas" on the board. Hardly the cute fish in the commercial. There is simply to much of the black ink inside the product that keeps covering up what you had drawn previously. When it came time to erase, this also proved difficult. You had to hold the stylus exactly right and with very equal pressure try to smooth the black ink ooze just right to cover the picture.
I also had a worry that if punctured, the film might let the black ink ooze on to say my carpet, but fortunately this never happened. The black ink seemed to be well contained in the unit, or maybe we just didn't use it enough for this to happen.
This toy has never been used since after the day we purchased it. Please stick with the Magna Doodle or Wonder Doodle. (I have reviewed Magna Doodle elsewhere).
One thing that does come with it is a set of pens. Basically you can write with the pens in one color and then take a special pen and change the original color of the first pen. I never used these, since I had already purchased a complete set of the pens from a fair. They are actually kind of cool, but they do dry out pretty easily.
