elzora's Full Review: MAG/POTASSIUM ASPARTATE W/TAURINE 120 CAPS NOW FOO...
Back in February of this year I started having some leg problems. We feel that it stemmed from my sitting in an ill fitting chair while resting a heavy laptop on my legs for too many hours a day.
I had two MRI's and go back for a third with dye contrast tomorrow, as my legs are still bothering me all these months later. Both my massage therapist and a new doctor told me to take certain supplements. I was advised to take calcium, complex B vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, and potassium.
The massage therapyst is into holistic health, and highly recommended the NOW brand, available only at health food stores in our area. I picked up a bottle of NOW Magnesium & Potassium Aspartate. I don't like to take pills, and being able to combine both the magnesium and potassium into one pill was attractive to me.
The Product
All of the NOW products I purchased have orange labels, and this one is no different. It has purple trim on the label and a plastic purple cap. The cap is connected at the back with a small piece of plastic, so it cannot be removed or get lost.
There are 120 capsules per bottle, and two capsules provide 300 mg of magnesium (from magnesium aspartate), 99 mg of potassium (from potassium aspartate), and 100 mg of free form taurine.
Other ingredients are gelatin (for the capsules), rice flour, and magnesium stearate (from a vegetable source).
Claims
The label says "heart health" and claims that this magnesium and potassium supplement will support healthy heart, muscle and nerve functions. The label also says "quality assured", but I do not see the word "standardized" on the label, so I am not sure what that means.
Thoughts
I always prefer taking capsules over pills. First, they are easier to swallow, and second I feel that the supplements get into the system faster when I take a capsule. I have taken vitamins that showed up on x-rays, proving they didn't even dissolve completely.
These are medium sized capsules, they are filled with a white colored powder and measure 1 inch in length. They are easy to swallow as long as I don't take two at a time.
My new doctor recommended that I take 300-400 mg of potassium 3 times a day. She said that when my body has enough of the potassium I will get very loose bowels, then I can back off a bit and take less. I have been taking only two of these capsules a day, and have been having diarrhea, so I am not going to take them three times a day, but just once in the morning.
My doctor actually recommended magnesium in ionic, or powder form, but I had already purchased the NOW Magnesium Potassium capsules, so I will look into the ionic form when these are finished.
When taking magnesium, it needs to be balanced with potassium and calcium, so I love how this product contains both magnesium and potassium in one capsule. When I read that this product also contains "Taurine", I didn't know what that meant. In reading the side label it states: "This special formula is comprised of Magnesium and Potassium complexes formed from L-Aspartic Acid. Chelates of these elements have been formulated with Taurine to help support healty heart, muscle and nerve functions. Taurine is an amino acid which can function as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. It serves as a potent synergist to these important minerals.
I have read that magnesium aspartate is better absorbed by the body that some other forms of magnesium, so I feel this is a good choice for me, until I find it in an ionic form. Magnesium does a lot for the body, it helps increase energy, aids digestion, it helps relax the muscles, assists in regulating the heartbeat, helps in formation of bone, and much more!
I haven't taken this supplement long enough to know if it will help my leg problems or not, but I have had a lot of heart palpitations over the last few months, and I wouldn't doubt that my body is indeed low in magnesium. I feel this product is of high quality, and love how the magnesium and potassium are already balanced for me.
My bottle of 120 capsules of NOW Magnesium & Potassium Aspartate retails for $13.99, but I purchased it for $12.49.
