We have one of the Lyle book videotapes and my grandson listened to it at least 50 times. He matured now (41/2) so he likes true life tapes about reptiles. :)
Seriously though, he absolutely loved the character of Lyle and wanted to see it week after week. (We usually have him here once a week).
Your review was excellent. You are quite insightful and I loved the lessons learned.

You have no idea how timely this review is and how grateful I am feeling towards you. Your commentary on Lyle's predicament just clarified what path I need to take on a totally unrelated situation. My 82 year old mother is being harrassed by her condo association over her adoption of a precious stray dog. The neighbors are up on arms over the dog being "too long." One neighbor even screamed at my mother over the fact that her toddler was afraid of the dog and could hear it through the walls. (The dog does not bark, the child simply has magical powers.) I need to write the president of the condo association with a response to his treatment of my mother. I had no clue where to begin. You just gave it to me. I am ordering this book and sending it along with your list of twelve lessons learned and a plea that he take the time to read it and realize the error of his ways.
You truly inspired me and resolved a major problem for me. Thank you!

Oh Redlass -
This Children's Book Write off is just the best thing. I just got to go down my Nancy Drew memory lane, and now Lyle.
You hit the nail on the head with this observation:
"Waber has anthropomorphized Lyle, yet Lyle never speaks"
It just made this book so extra-charming and elegant. This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid.
I could never get my children as excited about Lyle as I was, I'm not sure why. But I truly treasure Lyle and the whole family.
Thanks!

My son is starting Kindergarten in two months but loves crocodiles. Also we have taped the HBO family series and we have the video version of this and the Ira Sleeps Over.
I think it is a good idea to get both books and thanks for the wonderful review.
I am going to mention these to the teacher tomorrow to see if she might have them in the classroom already.
Lots of books are available through schools too or the book club.
