| jerryku's Full Review: Logitech Z-540 4 Speakers |
I bought these refurbished off of Ebay, so maybe the quality isn't as good as a brand new set would be. But if my set of Z-540s are working perfectly, then I'm not at all satisfied with these speakers.
I got these because my girlfriend wanted a subwoofer set, so I gave her my old Labtec Pulse 424's (discontinued speakers, but critically acclaimed in their time). Those 2.1 speakers, in retrospect, produced much more powerful sound and of general higher quality. Meanwhile, the Z-540s produce a weaker sound, and just have less "oomph" behind them. Very noticeable in a game of Day of Defeat, the guns somehow sound more tinny and less powerful. I'm not sure why this is, but it may have to do with the fact that the 424's satellites were each powered by 6 watts, while the Z-540's are each at 5 watts. Does a single watt make that much of a difference? I can't say for sure.
I agree with other reviewers who say that these speakers are probably the best value for 4-speaker surround sound, though. Still, for gaming purposes, I much more prefer having my old Pulse 424's in the front, with cheapo $5-10 speakers in the back. Since the rear speakers are primarily used for listening for sneak attacks, the quality of the rear speakers aren't that important, I think. And also, many people may find that having surround sound music isn't that great of a feature, and would prefer great 2-speaker music, than merely good 4-speaker music.
So I strongly suggest potential buyers to figure out what kind of sound experience you're seeking. If you're not a big fan of 4-speaker music, then you might want to just get a great set of 2.1 speakers, so that games and music will be of higher quality.. and then get a cheap pair of speakers for your rear set (for gaming). If you really need 4-speaker music, then the Logitech Z-540 is probably your best bet.
