Pros: velvety colors, easy-to-blend,odorless, long-lasting, natural-looking, perle colors not too shimmery
Cons: not enough cool based colors available.
The Bottom Line: Smooth coverage, subdued colors, and excellent endurance make this eyeshadow line one of my favorites. A bit more expensive, but worth the difference.

Moss. Autumn leaves. Tree bark. The forest at dusk.
Grass in all seasons. Lake Michigan in late August. Purple mums. Late summer sunshine
Mustard. Rust. Dying embers of a summer campfire. Deep sapphire blue of the evening sky.
Such are the mental pictures that L'Oreal eye shadow colors bring to mind...
A gentle deer peeking through the sun speckled tree leaves...
"Hey, Mom. Wanna hear about a funny story? "
Sigh.
" Not now, dear. I am trying to write a review..."
The excitement faded from his face.
" Okay, what is so funny?"
I was determined to keep typing while half listening to this story.
" Well, there was this guy. He was driving somewhere."
Click. Click. Click. I kept typing my great new review .
" Then there was a deer that ran out in front of the car."
clickclickclick
(pause)
backspace. click.
" The guy could not stop in time so he hit the deer."
Click. Taptaptap. Backspace. Click. Click. Tap taptap. Backspace.
" He felt bad, so he picked up the deer and put it in his car."
Taptaptaptaptaptaptap . Click. Backspace. Tap. Tap.
" So this guy is driving along"
Click. Taptaptap. Spacebar. Spacebar.
"And he is driving along when the deer woke up. You see, the deer was not hurt, just knocked out."
TAP!
I turned to look at my animated son. He had my full attention now.
" So this deer went nuts in the car and bit the guy on the neck. The guy freaks out at the deer going ballistic in his car, so he pulls over to get out and call for help. You see, the deer will not leave the car and is running all over inside of it."
This was a really funny mental picture. And I thought I had a rough day sometimes.....
" So the guy pulls over and gets out to use a phone booth to call for help, and when he opens the door of the car, there is this dog that comes growling up and starts slashing at his legs. Now the guy has nowhere to go.
Hee hee. Heee Heeee. HAA HAAAA.
" So they played the 911 call on the radio and you hear the guy screaming and hollering about this $#%^&* deer that is running wild in his car and bit him on his ^#&$*)$ neck.
Then in the background, you hear this horrible dog growling and attacking him while he tells the 911 guy to hold on. Of course he is in a phone booth which offers him NO protection.
Then you hear him hollering at the #@$*($#@) dog to shut up. The guy gets back on the line and starts screaming about the @*$@( deer biting him in the $*#@ neck. "
HAHAHAHAAHHHHAAAAA
The more I think about this, the funnier it gets.
" I thought it was a joke, but it wasn't. It was on Bozo trucker's radio late last night. It was really funny. The guy said that it was a miracle that the deer did not hoof him to death in that car. Only to get dissected by a vicious dog...."
Ha HAHAHaaHAHAaa
Wait a minute. What the heck is Bozo trucker radio????
" Oh, by the way, could you stay off the phone at 6:30? The sports guy is having a contest and I want to win on the radio."
With that he walked into the other room to finish his homework.
NEWS FLASH
......before I continue, for all of you who might be irritated at the comical aspect of the deer's plight, worrying about it's state of well being, it did eventually get out of the car without injury and the dog was unharmed so no need to get all upset and rate this review badly......
END OF NEWS FLASH
Okay, so my review did not go as planned. But I still had a really good time.
Let me see, where was I ? Oh, yes.
That formerly peaceful and adorable deer before he turned into a vicious hoofing maniac in some guy's car leading him to have a VERY bad day.
L'Oreal Soft Effects eye shadow.
I am a makeup artist. I used to work in theater doing makeup. I have experimented with make up for a good part of my life. I have a collection of eye makeup that rivals the palette of my watercolor, acrylic and enamel paint collection - and they are pretty big.
My Love Affair With Color
I LOVE color. I use color. I design with color. I dress myself in color every day.
Some people have a memory for facts, figures or numbers. I have a memory for color.
I did not realize until I was out of my teens that not everyone has a penchant for color like I do. It was a bit of a shock at first. I can only imagine the high levels of frustration I have caused many a phone sales person trying to determine the color of something.
Green can be grass green in the summer, spring or autumn, or leaf green in any season, evergreen, pine green, blue green or green blue. Then there is faded green, colonial green, jade green, emerald green, true green, and lime fruit green. There is florescent green, teal green, lime peel green and , well, you get the idea.
Why I Like This Eyeshadow
One of my favorite pastimes is to completely change my look from day to day. One day I may look like Jacilyn Smith, the next day, I may go more for a Ann Margaret look. Then of course, there is my newest fun- the Marilyn Monroe look.
In order to achieve the many different appearances, it is imperative that I have the proper tools. Clothing , hair, accessories all must coordinate perfectly to make the look pass for complete. Paramount to the collection of the tools that I need is proper make up.
One of my favorite looks is using red hair. I use both autumn red hair and bright strawberry red hair, both of which fall under completely different seasonal categories. I also use many golden blondes, both light and darker. Golden brown is another selection of hair color that I will use often.
L'Oreal offers the best selection of eye makeup for that category of colors. I have many other brands of eye makeup from Maybelline, Revlon, Princess Marcella Borghese, BWC (beauty without cruelty), Stagelights (similar to L'Oreals loose eye powder eyes hadows but better), Cover Girl and even Estee Lauder(getting for Christmas). The list is much longer, but you get the idea.
L'Oreal Leans Toward Warmer Colors
As a rule, you will find with L'Oreal eye make up that the palette will lean more toward the warm side of the spectrum. The whites are often creamy and not pure bright white. The browns are very warm and reddish or golden instead of cooler.
Taupes are often on the warm side. Greens as well. You will be more apt to find any color in L'Oreal to be on the warm and fuzzy side. Cooler colors are more rare, although they have been known to make them from time to time.
There have been pure purples, sapphires, and pinks. I have even found a pure white on one rare occasion.
My Experience With This Eyeshadow
In the line of L'Oreal Soft Effects -including duos I have found the selection to run true to form.
Because I have so many of L'Oreal colors in other kits (4's instead of 2's), I have only purchased a few of the duo kits that had colors that I did not have in other kits.
Golden Moss / Mousse Perle is a duo kit that has a very nice pair of colors. There is a deep moss green color that I would tend to call DEEP army green. It is the color of army pants before they are washed and faded. The other color is a medium skin color that almost completely matches my skin tone on my hand. On the eye, it shows up a little better. It is wonderful for a natural look.
The moss is a great depth enhancer for the crease of the eye. It is a tad too dark for lid usage in my opinion, but makes a nice accent with red or golden blonde hair along with brown shadow.
Both colors have a champagne gold very fine glitter in them. Not overly shimmery, just enough for a nice accent.
Bronze Star
Absolutely delightful duo kit. These colors are variations of copper. The color is not overly shimmery, but there is plenty of muted glimmer of coppery highlights. One color is the color of a newer copper penny and the other is more of the old penny color. I use these colors very often with both autumn and spring colors of red hair.
Mahogany / Prism
I have another pair of colors in this series that I have only seen once and not since. It is Mahogany / Prism. These colors are beautiful with summer and winter palettes of hair and clothing. The prism is a light cotton candy pink with iridescent shimmer in it. The shimmer gives it almost a green shine in certain light along with the pink. It is really nice. Mahogany is a deep burgundy color. The shimmer in that color is understated, but it does have a distinct burgundy colored fine glitter in it.
These two colors seem to go on lighter than the other two kits. Perhaps it is because they were in the first releases of this line of eye shadows.
What is This Eyeshadow Like?
On the whole, this line of eye shadow goes on with velvety smoothness. The color is excellent and very concentrated. The Soft Effects eyeshadow is long lasting. It blends beautifully and lasts pretty much all day. However, if you were wearing this to work, you should reapply before an evening out.
I find the sponge applicators to be a nicer density of sponge than some other brands of eye shadow. They last a bit longer too. They are smooth and apply a rich amount of color to the lids. Very comfortable to use and pretty easy to handle.
Application and Removal
I do not like to apply these eye shadows with an eye shadow brush. They have a tendency to really crumble below the eyes. This stuff is meant to stay on the lids, so removal of dust without streaking is a bit tricky. If you are in a hurry and to not have the time to fuss, then just stick with the applicator.
After you are done for the day, removal on the whole is not bad at all. Soap and water work well.
Odor-wise, there is no odor to these eye shadows. That is a big factor to me. Most eye shadows are odorless, but there are still a few that irritate me from the smell.
Closing Comments
This is one of my favorite lines of eye makeup. It is very natural looking and excellent balance between matte and perle. Not too shimmery, but not too matte either. I do not like matte.
I would definitely recommend it for those who like a really glamorous look and especially for those who want a good selection of NATURE oriented colors.
