Timers can be used for various uses and thats what I purchased our timer for, various uses. I use it for cooking, hair applications, used to use it for time outs, and occasionally I take it to school and use it for class.
I wanted something inexpensive. Most of the timers Ive had over the years have lasted me years since I dont use them often. This one was purchased at a department store and cost $7.99. It is made entirely of hard white plastic. The time (in intervals of five) is written on the timer along with little lines for the minutes. The winding piece is also plastic and you turn the line and notch on the turning section to the amount of time you wish to set. It then begins to make a ticking sound as it moves until it hits zero. At zero, it makes a loud bell ringing noise. There is no back to the timer so it is loud enough to hear well. Ive noticed that the clicking sound slows down for the last five minutes and that to set it, you need to go to 10 minutes and back it down to get the clicking sound. Otherwise, to set it for a minute or so will not start the timer.
Since its made of plastic, you should be careful where you set it. You dont want the plastic to melt. I have mine on the counter next to the stove. It does tend to pick up air born grease, but it is easy to clean. I just use a small sponge with soap and water. I do not immerse it because of the metal bell in the back.
Im not a cook that worries much about timing meals because I tend to fix foods that dont require a lot of fussing and/or perfect timing. Even when using a timer, I tend to taste and sight test my foods to determine whether they are done or not yet done. However, on busy days when Im doing more than a couple of things at a time (and one of the things is cooking something) I do use a timer that alerts me to remember that Im cooking something. Otherwise, I tend to get distracted and things have been known to burn. I also use it when using a recipe for the first time. Usually the amount of cooking time is given and since I havent cooked the dish before (or often) I use a timer. Since most timers, and this one is no exception, are not totally accurate to the minute I set it for five less minutes then I need. That way, I can check it before its overdone and let it cook the extra five minutes if its needed.
One of the main ways I use this timer is for hair products. My husband is a stylist and I often get my perms and hair coloring done at home. Both of these kinds of applications require timing processes and this timer works great. For my hair applications, I do the same as I do when I use it for cooking, I time the last few minutes with my watch. My husband checks out the application about five minutes before he thinks it should be done and either resets the timer or we use our watch if it only needs a minute or two longer.
I had a similar (cheap) timer when my kids were little. I would use it as a time out device. I would have them set the timer for the allotted amount of time. While in their room, they could hear the timer ticking and then go off when theyd done their time. I found that it helped by avoiding any arguments over how much time had really gone by and it also helped me to remember that they were in their rooms. Sorry, theres no smilie that can be inserted here.
This timer has worked well when I take it to school for certain projects. Ive used it to time speeches when they are timed ones; Ive used it to keep track of time while they are working in groups so they know when they need to clean up before the bell rings and their class is over. It also works well for certain timed games that we do in class.
Its kind of amazing how many uses an inexpensive timer like this one can offer. This timer has been used at our house for about 5 years now and still works well and looks new. If you need a timer, I would recommend this one because of its cost and how easy it is to use. While digital timers are now available, Ill stick to this kind.
