So, you must be wondering, who would want a skillet with holes in it. That would be me; and if you are doing any barbequing this summer, it should be you.
During the summer months, we in Michigan, love to barbeque. It makes it summer. All through the cold winter we picture a summer day with a barbeque grill busy turning out all kinds of epicurean delights. The grill that we recently purchased has a large surface with a narrow tray on top. It has a side burner for side dishes. But, when cooking vegetables on the side burner we always complained that they didnt have the same barbeque taste as the meat. When cooking shrimp on the grill surface, they would often be sacrificed to the barbeque gods and fall into the coals.
I have tried many things to lessen the sacrifice process. I bought a flat grill to fit over the regular one that had small holes so things didnt fall through the grate. This worked but they then would commit suicide along the sides and sacrifice themselves to the grill gods. The materials that are used to make these vegetable grates are impossible to keep clean and end up caked with a greasy-like residue. I also tried a net-like wire basket but the shrimp and vegetables stuck to it and it was hard to handle because it was so hot to touch. I had finally given up on finding the perfect utensil for small barbeque foods.
And then, Voila! While shopping at Linens and Things I saw the best utensil for barbequing since the fork. It is the Home Barbeque Skillet. Yes, it does have holes in it! Thats what enables it to barbeque veggies and small meats and shrimp. It also has a handle on it that is made of wood and doesnt get hot. I can just pick it up while its cooking and shake those pesky bits of food around so they cook evenly and dont stick. The foods I cook in the skillet are too small to jump overboard and sacrifice themselves to the barbeque gods.
The food also doesnt stick because the skillet is made of high carbon steel with a non-stick surface. I also, if not in a shaking mood, can use a spatula or tongs to turn the food over and to stir the pieces. When Im finished using the skillet, I merely take it to the sink and wash it off using soap and water. The food comes out looking good and tasting great and the skillet is clean and ready to use again in a matter of minutes.
It does take up a bit of space on the grill surface. It is a 12 inch diameter. Id prefer it to be a smaller skillet but, so far, havent seen a smaller version. Most of our barbequing is done for small groups but if Im using it for veggies, it still takes up a lot of space that I could be using for the meat. However, oftentimes, Im grilling for just my husband and myself and theres plenty of room for it and the meat were grilling. When using it for shrimp, I sometimes wish it were even bigger. I guess its true that you cant please all of the people all of the time, but, you can please some of the people most of the time.
The barbeque skillet that Ive most recently seen has a folding handle and its not made of wood. While I like the folding (get it out of the way) handle idea; I like the properties of having a wood, not metal, handle which this new model is. Mine is sturdy and doesnt get hot. The directions sticker did state that this wooden handled model folds to get it out of your way but I have never found out how. Ive studied it and think that the sticker was wrong for this model. I have space to store it with the handle open anyway, so its not been an issue for me.
I would have been willing to pay a pretty penny for this utensil, but the skillet is really reasonably priced. It was only $7.99 and it wasnt on sale when I bought it.
So, if you are looking forward to barbequing this summer and youre tired of half the food tasting barbequed and half the food not tasting barbequed; or youre tired of half the food being sacrificed to the barbeque gods, this is a skillet that youll want to add to your barbeque equipment!
