Pros: Nice appearance. MP3, WMA, Divx, and many other files supported.
Cons: Can't play some DVDs. Upconversion doesn't work with component cables.
The Bottom Line: Deceptive advertising and failure to adhere to DVD standards.

| MajorWombat's Full Review: LG LDA511 DVD Player |
When I took the existing DVD player off my system for the kids to have, I replaced it with the LDA511 dvd player.
I purchased it for its ability to upconvert from regular DVD resolutions (480i or 480p) all the way up to 720 or 1080i. Some have said that upconverted DVD players provide a better picture for large screen sets.
What LG fails to mention until you have the unit home and read the manual, is that the upconversion does not take place unless you use the HDMI connection, which is the new HighDef digital connection. I can understand Bluray or HDDvd requiring such connections to protect their high def content (even though I disagree with it.) But what is LG trying to protect here? A regular DVD? Stupid idea, and I call it a design flaw.
Likewise, I call its occassional skipping of chapters a design flaw as well. One of the first movies I tried was Terminator 2. One chapter started, then the unit jumped ahead about 4 minutes. It was very disruptive. What other movies this unit might have problems with, I don't know. I returned it.
The unit can play Divx files up to version 5.1, so newer Divx files off the internet will not work properly whereas older files will. The unit can also display digital camera pictures directly by plugging in a SD or CF card into the front. It can also play MP3 and unprotected WMA files. But honestly, if it can't upconvert properly and it can't even play a movie from beginning to end, it's not worth having.
