About a year ago we decided to invest in cell phone service at work. After researching costs, service, plans and signal strength we decided to try Virgin Mobile. They had prepay options that offered the value of a contract plan without having to make a two year agreement. So, we decided to give it a try.

Next came the decision on which cell phone to purchase. One of the nice things about Virgin Mobile is the range of inexpensive phones. For our purposes it would need to be durable. We fully expected the phone to be dropped and banged around.

The sales agent was very helpful. He showed me two phones. I walked away with the Kyocera Oyster and have used it ever since.

At $9.99 the price was almost too good to be true. I was concerned that it would not hold up. (This was a promo. The price has now gone up to $14.99). The sales agent encouraged me to give it a try. So far, I've been very pleased. We've had no trouble out of it at all.

It's a handy clamshell design. This keeps gunk from accumulating around the keys. It also seems to help the phone handle bumps and drops better.

Be warned though. If you like a lot of ring tones you'll want to pay extra and download them. This one only has about 5 to choose from. For me, I don't care what the tone is as long as I can tell which phone is mine. Teenagers might be a bit more picky.

I've been very pleased with the phone. The battery life is good. I can charge it and go two days without plugging it in again even if I talk a lot. The signal strength is usually good when compared to friends who have Verizon or Cingular.

The big buttons make it easy to text or dial. There is a voice recognition feature that enables you to speak each phone digit to dial. I've found this feature to be a pain and don't use it. The phone seems to have a hard time recognizing the right numbers. Plus, it feels weird to "speak dial" a number in public.

Overall though, we've been very pleased. Virgin Mobile customer service has been top notch. When I had a question about programming the phone and couldn't find the manual they were ready to help.

It's been a great little phone!
