Pros: Ultra cool design. Consistent results when making consecutive toast batches
Cons: Pricey.
The Bottom Line: There are better bargains out there, but for the range of features and colors, I think it is worth the extra money

| tony1963's Full Review: KitchenAid KTT261 Ultra Power Plus 2-Slice Toaster |
The Kitchen Aid KTT261 is an amazing toaster. I've had about 3 toasters over the last 5 years, (A White-Westinghouse toaster oven, a Black and Decker wide slot, and a Toastmaster disaster) and have retired each of them because of poor performance. I'm not a fanatic about toast, but there was some problem with getting good results from each of my previous purchases. I decided to try Kitchen Aid because I have had great experiences with other appliances from them (Blender and Food Processor). When I saw they had a digital control panel, and a choice of colors that included red (!) I was hooked. The price was pretty steep, but I thought I would risk trying it (I purchased it through Cooking.com, and they have a good return policy just in case it tanked on the trial run).
The KTT261 has a browning range of 1 (lightest) - 9 (darkest), plus a "Frozen" setting that thaws items at a lower heat before starting the toast cycle, a "Bagel" setting for thicker/meatier items, and a "Reheat" feature (pretty useful when you want to butter toast that pops up before you are ready). For regular unfrozen bread, the standard settings seems to work nicely. I find the "Bagel" setting is also useful for thicker breads. For some items like english muffins the "9" setting doesn't brown very much even with the "Bagel" setting, so I think they should adjust the higher settings, but otherwise I've been pleased with the overall results. A BIG plus for me was the ability for the temp sensor to keep the browning consistent from batch to batch. On all my previous toasters, I'd have to adjust the setting before using it twice, otherwise it would not brown. My old toaster oven would need to cool off completely before I could even try using it again!
The KTT261 also has a wide slot that centers the bread evenly between the heating elements when you press the lever down, a real plus. The exterior is plastic and does not get very hot while operating. I thought it was great to have a choice of colors other than white/black/or silver. There's something about a red toaster, it's very rebelious :)
