Katz Delicatessen, (205 East Houston Street corner of Ludlow Street). In the 1980's I lived for a time less then a block away on Ludlow Street. Back then this part of town didn't have much to offer. It had seen better days. There were alot of burned out buildings, and vacant lots. But there would always be alot cars parked outside of Katz. People would travel from other cities and states to 'come back' for a pastrami sandwich from Katz. I ate here three of four times a week.
It has a 1940's delicatessen feel, very old New York. It's been used in alot of movies, some you might have even seen are "When Harry Met Sally", The famous scene when Harry - Billy Crystal and Sally - Meg Ryan are having lunch. And the women at the next table says "I'll have what she's having" was shot here. And it was also in Woody Allen's, "Broadway Danny Rose." To name a few.
Katz has been at this location for 112 years, when the neighborhood was still receiving the influx of European immigrants.
When you walk inside you are handed a ticket and you waitress will mark off the dollar amount of what you ordered, and you pay on the way out. The food is classic Jewish deli. Corn beef and pastrami sandwiches that could feed two, but that taste so great you'd never be able to part with any. This is some of the best corn beef, and pastrami you'll ever have in your life. With your meal you are given a variety of pickles, instead of the usual bread basket. Also Katz has a full line of Dr. Browns Sodas - Cream, Black Cherry, and one called Sel-Ray are the best.
They even have an order department, you can send someone a salami through the mail...They still have signs from WWII that say, "Send a salami to your boy in the army!" (The order department number is: 1-800-4-HOTDOG and the website is: www.katzdeli.com)
Lastly, there are photos lining the walls of famous people eating at Katz over the years. They have pictures of all of the most recent American presidents holding a sandwich!
This is the best deli in New York, maybe even the world.
