We have always used a Deere in my family and have always been satisfied. The LX277 is no exception. We have had the mower for about two years or so and have experienced few problems. Our neighbors own a Cub Cadet and we notice they experience problems more frequently than we do.
Pros
*17 horses, plenty of power to get up and down hills and valleys. The mower is not too loud either.
*It is easy to change oil and gas. The gas cap is a much more convenient location to the left the seat, as opposed to under the hood.
*This mower can go pretty fast for a mower and also contains a very rare feature (at least for me) in lawn mowers -- cruise control! If you have a lot of acreage ahead of you, then you can set the cruise control at the speed of your choice. The lever for cruise control is located to the right of seat.
*The pedals are very convenient as well. You have two small pedals for forward and reverse, and of course your break. The reverse pedal is a nice addition, making it much easier to back in and out of hard to mow places, such as around trees and such.
*Unlike most push mowers, this mower can handle high grass with little or no problem. I have in more than one instance cut very high grass after coming home from vacations and found that the Deere can handle it easily.
*We have also bought a trailer to add on to the mower with has proved to be a nice addition. The mower can handle the trailer with cargo (sticks, wood, rocks) just fine.
*You can always add nice features to your mower as well. We personally have not but you can add many little conveniences to make your mowing experience much more enjoyable. Some of the add-ons include: cup holder, home maintenance kit, sun umbrella, touch up pen, utility sack, ear protectors, and get this -- a am/fm/cassette sound system. So if you mow frequently you can make your mower just as personal as you would like.
A couple of small nuisances
*The only problem we have had with the mower itself is a belt coming off. We got it fixed no problem, but it did happen, showing that nothings perfect I guess.
*Every time you get off your seat the engine turns off. This gets really annoying if you are mowing and have to move sticks, balls, anything else your dog has dragged into the yard. So the best thing to do here is to either move everything before you mow, or learn to lean over or keep something on the seat to keep it running.
*If you have the blade on going forward and you push the reverse pedal, the blade turns off. Can get annoying if you get into tight places and need to keep going in and out.
*The lever on the left hand side that sets the height of the blade will sometimes pop up out of position if you hit something that might make the mower jump in the air a little. This is perfectly understandable, it just gets a bit frustrating if you do not recognize the lever has come up and continue to mow for a while, then you realize the grass you just did is not the same length as the rest of the grass.
*Cost--you pay for what you get in the end, so its worth it to me. You could pay less but have to get a new mower a lot more sooner, so it all equals out in my eyes.
Conclusion
If you notice throughout this review I used the word "convenience" many many times. This is of two reasons. One I do not know of a better word to use, and two that is exactly what this lawn mower possesses -- many conveniences. This conveniences make your mowing experience much more enjoyable and easier. The few cons are almost present in every other mower as well, so they really are not that bad just things that I would like to see done differently in the future. If you do not like the cost of the LX277 I still suggest you get a Deere, they run so much better than other brand. The Deere LX277 is a great mower especially if you have a lot of yard to cut in a little amount of time and I would definitely recommend it.
