| erinrounds's Full Review: Huffy Corporation Disney Princess 16" Bike |
As luck would have it, my daughter's first two-wheeler (with training wheels) suffered a fatal accident just weeks before her fourth birthday. Enter Grandpa to the rescue, he was anxious to replace the broken bike, and his choice was the Huffy Corporation Disney Princess 16 inch bike. Maddie was thrilled. No, thrilled isn't the word, she was beside herself until Daddy came home for the obligatory "some assembly required".
Assembly
The box holding the Disney Princess Bike was large, rectangular and heavy, really heavy. It became clear that this wasn't an assembly I was going to touch until my husband came home. He had the necessary tools on hand, wrench and screwdriver, and actually was able to "relatively" quickly assemble the bike. The directions were easy to read and follow. I still would not have touched this assembly however, as the bike is a bit unwieldy and it needs to be held just so to attach the wheels to the frame. The seat also needs to be adjusted for height. Luckily for us, the brakes and harder to assemble pieces were attached. For an experienced bike rider, I would say this is not a difficult installation.
It also comes with removable training wheels so that this bike will grow with the rider.
Can We Ride It?
The end result is one satisfied customer. Maddie loved to ride this bike through the cul-de-sac and the little neighbor girls couldn't wait to take a turn on it. When the weather wassn't too cooperative Maddie liked to remove the fanny pack with the princesses emblazoned on it, as well as the little flowered water bottle and play inside.
It's a very stable bike that gave us no trouble with wobbling. The seat is adjustable in height, so we were able to get many years of fun out of it. The training wheels are, of course, removable so that as Maddie's abilities increased we could make this a true "two-wheeler".
Braking is done either via a basic hand brake or until the new rider masters that, by backpedaling. I liked the ability to have my daughter do it either way to get comfortable stopping.
Price and Availability-
Prior to Grandpa's generous gift, Maddie had spied this bike at ToysR'Us on numerous occasions and professed her approval. This is not a bike I would have been likely to purchase for her, as the price was between $64.99 (regular) and the sale price I'd see on occasion of $54.99. This is quite a bit higher than comparably sized non-character bikes.
Durability of this product has been excellent. I must say that it has been left out in the rain on more than one occasion and although nothing is rust proof, this bike is holding up well to the weather. the plastic of the fanny pack does look a bit worse for the wear however.
Recommended Age
I have a very tall child and she received this bike for her fourth birthday and rode it well into last year when she turned seven. By removing the training wheels when she was ready, we were able to use this bike for a good long time as an intermediate before stepping up to a "big" girls bike just recently. I would recommend for an average height child that this bike would work for a 5-6 year old beginning rider.
