epinburk's Full Review: J. K. Rowling - Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Sto...
JK Rowling has written a fantastic book with themes and a writing style that kids and adults can enjoy.
Book for a Grown-up?
I bought this book on a whim at Heathrow airport last year while waiting for a flight back to the states. Up until this point I thought the Harry Potter series was written just for children; my wife convinced me to try it saying several of her "adult" coworkers were hooked on it! I bought it and got onto my plane.
Devoured.
There are only a handful of books that I have ever read front-to-back in one sitting. This is one of them. Granted, I was sitting in an airplane for 16+ hours, however the book had more to do with it than just the need to kill time.
Style.
Rowling mixes fantasy with reality in a clever way. Her writing is saturated with lyrical references to UK sounding words and word-forms. Many of the towns in and around London including Edinborough and other cities are steeped in a rich tradition of evocative words. Rowling borrows heavily from this tradition and spins her own vocabulary for the Potter books. These words are quite satisfying for the adult reader; I think small kids may have difficulty with some of them however they would enjoy them nonetheless.
Other world.
The real genius behind the book series is the structure of the two worlds, our Reality World and the Magic World. We use logic, reason and mathematics to reason in our reality; in the book, anything goes! And Rowling constructs whimsical explanations for everything magical.
In conclusion.
This book is FUN. That's it, it's no more complex than that. Harry is a very lovable character that the reader is instantly able to build an affection for. In addition, there is so much detail in this book that I could imagine you would be able to read it a number of times and still enjoy it.
