| DoubleCoog's Full Review: Harp Lager |
There's nothing like a half-n-half a.k.a. an all-Irish Black and Tan. A base of Harp Lager topped with a perfectly foamed Guinness--and preferably not ice cold. The two tastes were clearly created to be enjoyed together.
Harp is a fine smooth lager which sits right in between Bass Ale and Guinness Stout on the beer taste meter. Harp has all the smoothness of Bass, but brewed with dark barley, like Guinness, retains the same signature musk to it--all with virtually no aftertaste.
Although Guinness is as Irish as it gets, since that is my regular brew of choice, I always associate Harp with St. Patties Day. And why not, it is the perfect complement to Corn Beef & Cabbage, Irish Stew and virtually any other Irish Feast Day food.
Harp has also been described as the perfect beer for someone wanting to transition from typical American lagers to foreign brews with a full range of taste.
This year it was a key participant in my Millennium celebration; as I stated before in previous reviews, the Guinness supply in my local stores had disappeared; whether y2k rationing hysteria, or Stout terrorism, I needed a solid plan to avoid a neverending tap of Bud Light. Harp was the cornerstone of that plan; I drank many brews during that week, but always knew in the back of my mind, no matter what, I had a six of Harp hidden in the back of the fridge.
