Very clever and efficient design

Pros: Nice and clever design; good basic toasting; does the job it is intended for

Cons: no grill over the pan; no quick release of the toaster lever.

The Bottom Line: More than adequate since I have a good convection oven in my range. NB: I had to state an opinion on durability but had this unit for only 2 weeks!

Just bought this new counter toaster and oven. The design is very neat and modern. It might not fit in an Old style or country type kitchen.
My old Black & Decker worked fine until it started to set toasts on fire on a regular basis. I went through epinions to find a toaster oven that performed well and was disappointed by the poor ratings of the B&D's. Hamilton Beach had overall better ratings than most so I looked further into them.
Upon unpacking, I was happy to see this unit was very compact and would not take too much space on the counter.
I had not really realized that with the touch of a lever you basically convert the oven into a toaster and vice-versa. When in the oven configuration, there is a trap on top of the unit that is covered with a foldable metal door. Push the lever on the front of the unit and the door opens to leave way to 2 slices of bread. Then just press the lever that you find on conventional toasters and the bread slice support will go down in front of the cooking elements. The trap is wide enough to allow toasting of thick slices of bread or bagels.
Toasting is perfectly adequate but to get your toasts medium-dark, you will have to set the shade selector to 5 which is the highest setting available.
I see one problem with the toaster. Let's suppose the shade selector is set to 5 and that you have just started toasting a slice of bread; then you realize you don't want to have it dark and would prefer a more lightly toasted piece of bread;, there is no way you can bring up the bread slice support by pulling up the lever: what you have to do is to unplug the toaster and then it will come up.
My old B&D had a small grill that I could place on top of the baking pan. That was useful when I wanted to grill something as crumbs or fat would fall in the pan making cleaning easy. This unit does have a pan but not a grill.
I am happy with my purchase as it is simple, small and does the job!
