aes_sedai's Full Review: Pets International Gravity Bin Feeder Colors
Super Pet (aka Pets International) manufactures and distributes a wide variety of pet products for all sorts of pets. They specialize in plastic toys, feeders, bottles, litter pans, and so on. The name is quite familiar, especially in the world of ferret lovers (also known as ferret slaves); in general, you cannot walk into an American pet store without finding a selection of their products, priced reasonably and made to last.
We purchased our first Super Pet Gravity Bin Feeder when we adopted our first two ferrets. We wanted a good-sized feeder capable of dispensing fresh food as needed throughout the day, and it needed to be something that was easy to remove and re-attach to the cage, easy to clean, and withstand sharp, scrabbling ferret claws. First, we tried the Marshall J-Feeder. Hated it (more on that later). After doing more research, I found the Super Pet Gravity Feeder, and decided to try it.
For the uninitiated, a gravity feeder isnt any big deal. Its merely a feeder more or less J-shaped, in which food poured from the top gradually falls to the feeding bin at the bottom through gravitational force; hence the name. The nice thing about this type of feeder is that you can pour a couple of days worth of food into it and it will last longer than if you put food in a normal dish (unless you have a LOT of ferrets, or a couple of really, really piggish ones). In our multi-ferret home, this style suits us well.
The Super Pet Gravity Bin Feeder is made of hard, heavy-duty plastic, virtually impervious to ferret claws. It is, of course, J-shaped, with a small door flap at the top (into which you pour the kibble), and a collection/feeder bin at the bottom (the hook of the J-shape), from which the ferrets eat. It attaches to the cage using a simple three-piece clamp-style attachment, including the clamp/bin holder, the tightening disk, and a standard flat-head bolt. First, you attach the clamp/holder to the inside of the cage by inserting the bolt from the inside of the cage, through the clamp, and through the cage bars to the outside; then from the outside of the cage you attach and tighten the tightening disk by screwing it onto the bolt. Lastly, you attach the feeder by snapping it in place to the clamp inside the cage. Voila! Easy. The beauty of this design is that there are minimal parts. It is quick and easy to attach to pretty much any cage (weve now used three different style cages, each with entirely unique bar styles, and different bar spacing); and it stays secure and tightly attached to the side of the cage. Because there isnt any space between the bottom of the feeder and the floor, nor between the cage bars and the back of the feeder, my digger-girl has yet to figure out a way to pop the unit out of the clamp. The unit holds approximately two pounds of food, or 2-3 days worth for our four ferrets, supplemented by a second crock-style feeder. It is easy to remove for cleaning, and easy to replace without fighting with the clamp assembly. Because the upright or "throat" portion of the feeder is nice and wide (approx. 5"), food doesn't easily get lodged, and flows fairly smoothly into the trough feeder at the bottom. It is readily available in major retail pet stores as well as online, and is affordably priced at around $8.
My only real complaint with this unit is the flap-style door at the very top. Weve now had two of this model, and in both cases the flap immediately broke off, thanks to digger-girl crawling under it and stealing food from the top, or digging down into it like a miner to China. The flap is attached only by a thin piece of plastic, and it doesnt seem to serve any purpose; certainly it doesnt push the food downward in any way.
Overall, however, the Gravity Feeder is well-constructed, easy to attach/remove for cleaning, easy to fill with food, fits just about any cage, and holds plenty of kibble for multi-ferret households. It is affordably priced, and easy to find.
