craigandliana's Full Review: Graco Training Rewards Soft Seat Potty & Stepstool
I bought this for my daughter when she was 1 year and 5 months old. Luckily, she took to it immediately and wasnt intimidated or scared, but I realize thats more a function of personality rather than the product. Still, it was a good start.
Features
The Graco Training Rewards Soft Seat Potty & Stepstool is designed to adjust from a potty seat on the floor, to a soft seat toilet insert and, after closing the lid, a step stool. It also comes with a soft deflector for boys. I cant speak to the efficacy of the deflector, but it seems like it could be more trouble than its worth because it could get in the way of getting on and off the chair. But then again, I havent had to potty train any boys.
This potty seat comes with 48 reward stickers, if you and your child are into that kind of thing. Our daughter absolutely loved them.
There are also some rubber pieces that fit along the underside edge of the seat that give it a little more traction on slippery bathroom floors.
Our Experience
As a floor potty seat, this chair is pretty comfortable and accessible for toddlers. Our daughter likes being able to get on and off it by herself. The only drawback is that the white cushion comes off too easily, so she often bumps it askew when trying to sit down. Also, this means that urine easily gets trapped between the white cushion and the blue frame. And when I say easily, I mean every time, which requires extra vigilance to keep clean. Youre supposed to be able to tuck the edges of the white cushion into little clips on the blue frame, but for whatever reason, these dont hold for me. At first, I didnt mind, but now the added step of having to clean between the cushion and frame after practically every use makes me yearn for something simpler.
Using the soft seat as a toilet insert is pretty self-explanatory. I was hoping to use the soft seat around as a portable potty seat for when we leave the house, but the handles on the side of the seat (designed to give kids something to hold to for stabilization) make it a little too bulky to carry around easily (we bought a folding potty seat for this purpose and its worked out great).
We havent yet used the seat as a step stool, but once we start transitioning our daughter into using the seat as a toilet insert (which I plan to do soon; she turns two next month), I expect it will be useful in helping her get up to the toilet. The stool is not tall enough for her to reach the sink, though. I assume that will change as she gets older and taller.
Cleaning
Aside from the aforementioned urine trap, emptying this potty is pretty easy. I dont have experience with other types of potty seats to say whether the sure-Grip handle is really all that extraordinary, but its not bad.
Now, because we use cloth diapers, we have a hose attachment on our toilet which makes spraying down the potty itself pretty quick and easy, no matter whether its pee or poop. Every so often I do like to run a wipe over the potty.
In Short
Even though Im really less than thrilled with this potty seat, it still provided a good introduction to potty training and our daughter really took to it. There may better seats out there, but I still think this was worth it for us.
