| mommykd's Full Review: Gerber Soft Starter Cup |
My 3 1/2 year old daughter was off the bottle completely by the time she was 10 months old. Naturally, I want to try and accomplish the same thing with her baby brother who is now 8 months old. At 6 months, he was already trying to take her cups and drink from them. And so....the introduction to sippy cups has begun.
My first purchase - round one - was the Gerber Soft Starter Cup . This is a 6 ounce cup and features a soft flexible spout designed to ease the transition from breast or bottle. It features easy to grip handles on each side and a a spill proof lid that will also fit on other easy grip Gerber cups. The valve that fits into the lid is white plastic and is a "one hole design" - meaning the lid only has one hole for the valve to fit into rather than two. The Gerber Soft Starter Cup comes in different colors including blue and green, pink and purple, and blue and red.
Our experience
The first time I tried giving the cup to my son he was about 6 1/2 months old and all he did was chew on the spout and bang the cup around for awhile. We tried again a few days later, and this time I tried it first thing in the morning - when I knew he was hungry! He was able to hold onto the handles and turn the cup up and drank from it rather easily - for about the first 2 ounces. It seems to still be a little difficult for him to get the last ounce or two out of the cup. Now, at 8 months, he is drinking from the cup occasionally, but not exclusively. He will take formula, juice and water from the cup, but gets bored with it after a few minutes. I'm still not trying to force the issue, simply because I do not want to discourage him from using it completely.
Likes and Dislikes
I like that the cup has a soft spout. It seems to ease the transition from the bottle and also provides soothing comfort for teething. At least this one won't have scraped marks from teeth like some other tops!
I like the easy grip handles. They are easy for small hands to hold.
I like that the lid fits on and tightens perfectly in line with the center of the cup and the handles.
I do not like that it will not fit into the cup holder on his stroller or his car seat.
I also do not like that the valve seems to come out easily. If you don't push it in very tightly, repeated sucking and banging can easily dislodge it, which will turn it into a non spill proof cup.
Overall
I think this is a good first cup to introduce the sippy cup to an infant 7 - 9 months old. The soft spout eases the transition and the handles make it easy for baby to hold.
