vemartin's Full Review: General Electric JGBS23SEMSS (Gas) Stainless Steel...
We moved! Finishing off an ordeal that started earlier this year, my spouse and I moved into our new home on August 10th, which accounts for my long absence from Epinions! Moving is hard work, but it is also fun! Since ours is a new construction home we got to choose all our new appliances—refrigerator, free stand range, dishwasher, washer and dryer. And since I am the cook in the family, the honor of choosing the Gas Range fell to me.
Now, our home builder offered all GE appliances, which is fine with me, since GE has always been a name I could trust, except for home electronics, but that is subject for another review! I wanted a Gas range with an extra large oven, so that I could bake several items at once or cook an over sized turkey and all the trimming without a second thought; i.e. sweet potatoes, home-made macaroni and cheese, three bean casserole, etc.. I wanted a self-cleaning oven (of course), and a range-top with a rim around the outside to contain spills. Lastly I wanted a range with and electronic temperature control that would let me know when the temperature inside the oven reached the desired level. All these requirement and more were met by the GE XL44 Free Standing Gas Range.
Just The Specs. Man:
The GE XL44 Free Standing Gas Range offers the following features:
* Porcelain-Enameled Lift-Up Cooktop
* Standard/Twin Cooktop Burners
* Grey Standard Porcelain-Steel Square Grates
* Electronic Pilotless Ignition System
* Extra-Large 4.4 cu. ft. Standard Clean Oven
* Slide Out Broiler Drawer
* Extra-Large Broiler Pan with Grid
First Impressions:
I am impressed! Although we haven’t been using the XL44 for long, we do have occasion to use it every day. The controls are straight forward, and easy to turn; anyone familiar with a gas range will recognize the tick, tick, tick of the starter as the range-top burner are ignited. The knob for the oven is a smooth rotary handle and the digital display allows you to dial in the exact temperature needed.
Clean up is a snap. The grates around the burners can be removed effortlessly, and since there is no pilot the burners themselves can be cleaned, as well as the area underneath. An alarm sounds when the desired temperature is reached in the oven and a light on the range-top illuminates as well, and stays lit until the over is turned off. And there is of course a switch for the built in oven light. The broiler pan is spacious with room for at least four large steaks, or mountains of chicken breasts and or hamburgers.
Our oven came is white and as presented no cleanup problems; a simple wipe down with a damp cloth is usually all that is needed. Overall, I am very happy with our choice, but the real test will come with the first batch of chocolate chip cookies; stay tuned…
