The smallest member of my family seems to be the smelliest! I never thought such an odor could come from such a small animal! Well, after many trials of expensive, average and generic litter, I've found the answer to cure my smelly cat . . . Fresh Step Scoop with Baking Soda.
I honestly purchased this product by mistake one day, and it was one of the best mistakes I've ever made. This litter is affordable, works extremely well for my cat, and is easy to obtain! (I don't have to drive to a special pet store to buy it!) Most grocery stores and discount chains carry this product.
Why I NEEDED this litter . . .
See, my cat sleeps in my bed with me, under the covers, more than my husband does. If the litter she is using isn't effective, I end up sleeping with a smelly cat! Also, some litters from the past didn't clump so well . . . leaving deposits in her paws . . . leaving trails in my bed. I don't know about you, but I find that pretty disgusting. On one occasion, I actually got out of bed, changed my sheets and washed my cats paws so that we could get some sleep. Fresh Step Scoop has eliminated this problem!
Basics
~ Size and Cost ~
Fresh Step Scoop comes in 3 sizes . . . 14, 21 and 28 pound packages. The two smaller sizes come in a cardboard box with sturdy plastic handle. The largest size come in a square plastic bucket with a lid. (The bucket can be used for numerous things after it's emptied!) Price may vary from store to store, but the average prices are $6.00 for the 14 lb box, $9.00 for the 21 lb box, and $11.00 for the 28 lb box. Obviously, the more you buy, the better the price per pound.
~ Effective? ~
Fresh Step Scoop claims to be "highly absorbent and quick-clumping". It also has "mosture-activated odor fighters to neutralize odor between scoops".
This is one of the few cat litters I have found that does what it says. My cat seems to leave an awful odor of ammonia that seems to disappear with this particular brand of litter. Also, the clumping has made it 10 times easier to clean her littler box! I actually don't mind when it's time to "scoop" or completely change her litter.
Paw Points
Most sizes of Fresh Step Scoop containers have Paw Points: 14 lbs = 2 points, 21 lbs = 3 points, 28 lbs = 4 points. You collect points from the packages and when you reach your desired reward, you mail in an order form and send it in to their address. Currently they offer 4 rewards to pick from . . . A bean bag toy for 8 points, a coupon for one 14 lb container of litter for 14 points, a 15" cat bed for 28 points, or a cat carrier for 48 points. Everything except the coupon requires additional shipping.
***I wouldn't recommend buying this litter just for the "rewards". But, if you do purchase this litter and use it continuously, it's a nice bonus!
Yes, they too have a website. I was actually quite impressed though . . . it wasn't what I thought it would be. They have an interactive link where you can answer trivia questions, enter a "Funny Feline Photo Contest" or download a kitty screen saver. It takes about 3-10 minutes to download the screen saver depending on your computer speed. The screen saver is a kitten chasing 2 butterflies across your screen . . . then it shows a picture of a woman and a cat, which becomes completely covered with blue paw prints . . . really cute!!!
They also go into detail about all the products they offer, Sweepstakes, "Paw Points", and "Safe Steps Home". (See below)
If you would need to contact them, they have an email link or if you'd rather speak with someone directly, their customer service number is 1-800-325-9259.
Help A Shelter
I was also impressed to find out that Fresh Step and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals (ASPCA) started a program called "SAFE STEPS HOME". This program was formed to help rescue and find homes for cats. A percentage of each purchase is donated to this cause. The maximum amount they donate each year is $250,000.00 More information can be found on their website. You are actually making a donation to an animal charity just by purchasing any type of Fresh Step litter. Makes me feel better about my purchase! :)
Closing Thoughts
Just like most products, if it works for me, it may not work for you. Each cat is unique, therefore, you may need to try several different litters before you find the one that is right for YOUR cat. I honestly believe though that this product is effective and well worth the money.
Tips to help control litter box odor . . .
~ It's suggested that not more than 2 cats share a litter box. (You wouldn't want to share your toilet with your neighbors, would you?)
~ Also, baking soda does wonders for ammonia smell. Adding a little into a litter box may help a lot.
~ If you notice your cat seems a little smellier than usual, try scooping the litter box more often than you do. Some cats may need their box scooped twice a day, some once every few days. The more you scoop, the better the smell. Also, try changing the litter more often than once a month.
