Cons: this book could possibly end up in the hands of younger children
The Bottom Line: Forever is beautifully written and true to life, also leaves room at the end for discussion about premarital sex for parents and their teenager
Forever was written by Judy Blume in 1975. Judy Blume is the Author of numerous Best Selling books such as "Smart Woman" , "Wifey", "Summer Sisters" and also childrens books such as "Tales of the 4th Grade Nothing", "Superfudge",
"Deenie" and "Are you there God? It's me Margaret".
Forever is a beautifully written story about the end of innocence. Seventeen year old Katherine Danziger is the main character in the book. It's written from her point of view, and it is about the 9 month long relationship during her senior year with Michael Wagner who is the same age.
Katherine and Michael are two teenagers experiencing first love together. They meet at a mutual friend's New Year's Eve party. Initially, Katherine isn't too impressed with Michael, but as the night wears on, she finds herself growing more and more attracted to him. Then he shows up the next day and admits he's interested in her. They spend countless hours together; dating, going skiing, making out, etc.
Katherine is beginning to experience her first real adult relationship with Michael. As you read this, you begin to feel what they are going through. Unlike other teenage romance novels, this book is informational and realistic. Katherine is responsible and mature. From waiting until she feels ready for sex to her first gynecological exam and getting on Birth Control through Planned Parenthood, Katherine makes smart decisions.
Even though it was written in the 70's the material is pretty much up to date about sex. The one thing that's changed over the years is AIDS, which Judy Blume briefly talks about at the beginning of this book as well as Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
Forever was a favorite of mine in early high school and still remains one of my favorites. It is very enjoyable to read. I would recommend this book for young readers over the age of 13.
In my opinion Forever is beautifully written and true to life. It would not influence a person to go out and have sex, it would rather warn them of the dangers of love at such a young age, and that nothing is forever.
