| DeniseNC's Full Review: Dimetapp Elixir |
Its that wonderful time of year again, fall and cold season. I love the fall, but along with the falling leaves come the falling temperatures, that climb back up just to fall again. This in my opinion helps initiate colds.
Unfortunately last week my two year old daughter and myself caught a nasty cold. Runny nose, nasal congestion (could someone please tell me where all that nasty stuff comes from yeck), all the goodies you come to expect from a cold.
Looking in the medicine cabinet I found Dimetapp Elixir. After consulting my pharmacist I decided to try this with my daughter. Ok so this was going to be fun. Kids do not like medicine, this includes my daughter. I pictured myself chasing her around the house with the measuring spoon, cute picture too. After finally coaxing her (ok bribery works) she tried it. To my amazement she said "yummy purple stuff mommy". I was shocked. Other medications I have tried she refuses to finish after taking that initial taste. (can't say I blame her either)
The dosage for Dimetapp Elixir is Adults and children over 12: 2 teaspoons every 4 hours, children 6 - 12 1 teaspoon every 4 hours. I wish the dosage lasted longer.
Dimetapp Elixer's directions on the bottle, are not actually recommended for children under six. I called the pharmacy and was told to give her one teaspoon every 4 hours. Before you use Dimetapp, please consult your pharmacy or doctor. Make sure to keep all medications out of the reach of children. As with any condition that does not improve please consult your doctor. The bottle says this medicine may cause drowsiness, it did not make my daughter or myself sleepy, but be aware that it can make you drowsy.
I am not totally sure if any cold medication actually works. Some say they just help relieve the symptoms. Dimetapp seemed to help my daughter. It helped my mental state by being able to give my daughter a cold medication that she liked that seemed to make her feel better. Her not running and hiding from the medicine is enough for me to recommend you at least try it. I tried it and it did taste good. It also cleared my nasal congestion for about an hour. Of course it is always best not to take medicine, but when you have a sick child looking at you with those sad eyes, it is good to know there are safe reliable products such as Dimetapp Elixir.
Her cold is now almost gone, at least to the point where she no longer needs cold medication. Somehow I have to get it across to her that she can not have the yummy purple medicine anymore, or not until she has a bad cold again which I hope is a long time off. When she does get another one I will use Dimepapp Elixir.
