| jvandegr's Full Review: Dell P780 17 inch CRT Monitor |
Introduction
For reference, I use a desktop area of 1072 X 768 with True Color (32 bit) with a NVIDIA TNT2 video card in a Dell Dimension. Note that the photo of the monitor provided with this review is not correct - the real monitor has a flat screen and slightly different control layout.
Features and Performance
This Dell-branded flat tube Trinitron is one of the best monitors I have ever seen. I've used it for over two years and have never had a single problem. At work, I have a Dell 19" monitor that is not a Trinitron and does not have a flat tube - it is a joy and a relief to come home to my smaller P780 monitor. The picture is very sharp from corner to corner. Color is excellent and suitable for high-end graphics work, web design, and image processing. Eye strain is absolutely minimal with this monitor, even after hours of use. The monitor settings (geometry, contrast, etc.) are easy to adjust with the built-in controls. Power consumption is relatively low, and the monitor is Energy-Star compliant; in power-saving mode, it only uses a few watts, which definitely helps keep the electric bills down. I only experienced excessive screen flicker once. Turned out to be a power problem, not a monitor problem - after plugging it into an APC BackUPS unit, the flicker disappeared.
My first P780 had a hot pixel in the middle of the screen that was just too brilliant to ignore. I called Dell and they immediately sent a replacement at no charge and they took the old monitor away. Great service.

Conclusions
The Dell P780 is a superb, smaller monitor with great picture quality. I just sold this monitor for one reason only - I'm doing more image processing and need more desktop area. So, I purchased its big brother, the same monitor but with a 19" tube (Dell P992) and it is even more amazing.
