Cytosport lured me into trying Muscle Milk with tag lines like "Nature's Ultimate Growth Formula" and "Burn Fat! Don't Store It!". A bodybuilder friend also recommended it so I decided to give it a shot. I bought some trusty Methoxy-Pro just in case the experience wasn't pleasant.
Well what is this "Muscle Milk" anyway?
Basically, it is a high protein/low carbohydrate supplement. It contains 32g of protein to only 12g of carbs. Cytosport claims to have "unlocked the secrets" of mother's milk to muscle growth. By adding their own blend of creatine, proteins, and leanlipids, Cytosport has created what they call the "Ultimate Growth Food".
When and how do I use this stuff?
The label says to use Muscle Milk before, during, and/or after workouts. It also says that if you take it before bed that it will "help you wake up more anabolic".
Mix two scoops with 10-12oz of water, Cytosport claims that if you mix it with low-fat milk that it taste like a real milkshake! It really says that on the label... no milkshake I ever tried tasted like this! Don't get me wrong, Muscle Milk is one of the best tasting supplements I have tried, but a "real" milkshake? I think not! Maybe the Vanilla flavor does, but chocolate is more like Ovaltine. It mixes VERY well, it doesn't have any big lumps or grains floating in it. The cosistency is about like chocolate milk, maybe a little thicker, but WAY thinner than Met-Rx! One of the best things about Muscle Milk is that it taste the same wheather mixed with water or milk. You can save yourself some extra calories by using water without giving up flavor!
Does it do what it says?
Not by itself! You have to do your part. The jury is still out on this one. I can't tell if it is doing me any more good than any other protein supplement. It gives your body the materials it needs to repair muscle after a workout, but I can't say that in one month of use that Muscle Milk can be directly linked to any of my gains.
Well is there anything BAD about Muscle Milk?
The price! Cytosport is proud of this stuff! I guess it cost a lot to perfect the formula for enhanced breast milk!
It contains 18g of Fat per serving! In their defense, Cytosport explains the high fat content... You get 18g of "Good lipids" that help to promote fat loss! Fat makes you loose fat?! This is a breakthrough I haven't heard. I'm no scientist and I won't argue it. I'm just saying it is new to me. There are four paragraphs on the label defending those 18g's.
There are 348 calories per serving in water! That number jumps to 638 if you use 2 cups of lowfat milk (does 2 cups = 10-12 ounces?) I figure it is about 120 more calories with skim milk mixed per the directions. Still, that is a whopping 468 calories, of which 162 come from fat.
Any final thoughts?
Muscle Milk taste great! It mixes very well and it is very satisfying. I wish all protein supplements were this good. If you can get your mind past thinking that Fat of any kind is bad then Muscle Milk may be for you. Plan on spending a few extra dollars for it though, a 15 serving(2.48lb) container cost $5 more than as 26 serving container of my favorite supplement. I plan to try it for one more month to see if I have reviewed it accurately. Give it a shot, the taste alone is worth a try.
