I have been tracking the progress of this player since Samsung first introduced it on their site as the "Yepp D." I held out for it. It seemed amazing. Better than the Rio. It was magnesium-cased, the website said, as well as capable of FM tuning, voice recording, and *shiny*...on a personal revealing note, I like shiny things. That's why I collect antique lighters, flasks, and cigarette cases. This looked like an item that would fit in with the "shiny-ness" of my collection. And very useful. So I waited. And waited. The site seemed neglected. Then, all of a sudden, I find a certain "Nomad" being brought out by Creative Labs, just when I was about to break down and purchase a Rio so that my Rio-owning friends would accept me. A near-victim of this peer pressure, I bolted at the chance to purchase the Yepp-turned-Nomad. I went with the 64 version, and I am pleased with it.
It is not "just a Rio." I have seen and used the Rio, and I personally find the Nomad a better player. First off, it just seems sturdier than the Rio. I, aside from the shiny metal fetish thing, feel that the plastic of the Rio doesn't match up. As far as price goes, I got mine for around $202 plus shipping. This is cheaper than the Diamond PMP 300SE, which retails at $250. And, with the 64 meg, I am peacefully happy with listening to amount of music the time permits me. I am not attracted to MP3 usage for a potentially enormous amount of time that I can listen to music. I like the fact that it replaces my mix tapes, and yes, I do occasionally receive MP3s that I did not rip myself. I don't deny it, and have no qualms with that. The fact that I can listen to Les Miserables and Nirvana, Bob Dylan and Blondie all in an hour stretch is what appeals to me. I can take it on a walk and slip it in my pocket next to my cigarettes (which reminds me, the size is perfect).
This is a great player, and in no way "just a Rio." It was worth the wait, from Samsung to Creative, and finally to my pocket.
