| thebrit100's Full Review: Craftsman Belt/Disc Sander, Bench Top, 4 x 36 in. ... |
I purchased this unit from Ebay, and got a pretty good deal.
The unit uses 4 x 36 belts and 6inch self adhesive discs.
The construction is solid, heavy cast iron base, however i recommend it be bolted down, it will walk across the bench.
There is a dust cover with a port for dust removal on the rear of the belt. The cover is plastic and held on by two screws and a pin moulded into the cover, this is tricky to remove. However when its connected up to the shop vac it works great, very limited dust gets out. The is a sheet metal stop on the top surface of the Belt, this moves fairly regularly and hence needs tightening. You need to use it to stop material hitting the plastic dust cover and the rear, the forces can be quite high. Belts are changed by removing the dust cover and sliding back the tensioning arm, the belt can then be slide over the drums, the tensioner is then released and the dust cover put back on.
Be careful when you start the unit, you have to tune the tracking using the screw on the side, the belt can move sideways very rapidly and then hit the dust cover, it doesnt do the belts much good at all, first one i put on got torn.
The disc is 6 inches in diameter and uses self adhesive discs. there is a table to support the work which is adjustable for angle and it includes a mitre guage, this mitre gauge is plastic and doesnt fit the slide well. However with careful use it does allow accurate angles to be sanded. The disc is partially covered with another dust cover; the port sized to fit a shop vac, it does a good job of getting rid of the dust.
This tool is capable of high material removal rates as well as fine detail work. I used it to put a 3/8 by 1 1/2 on maple in a very short time,
As well as finish sanding on a number of parts.
The unit is good value, well constructed and will serve the purposes of any enthusiastic woodworker. I also came across a good source of belts and discs, just do a search for sandpaper on ebay, you will come across a supplier called Barbkat, she does a great job.
