| dlstewart's Full Review: Craftsman 3-Drawer Metal Portable Chest 65337 |
My father prefers a tool chest where he can organize his tools by type. The Craftsman 3-Drawer Metal Toolbox offers him three slide-out drawers of organizing space as well as a top locking section for additional storage.
Description
This Craftsman toolbox is fire-engine red and constructed of enameled steel. There is no way my father (who tends to misplace things) can miss finding this bright red box. The chest measures 12" high x 20 1/2" wide x 8 1/2" deep. The weight when not crammed with tools is about 17 pounds.
Each aluminum drawer has excellent sliding action and fully opens. The front of each drawer is black and gray to distinguish it from the red box, plus its a nice contrast color. The three drawers each measure 2 1/8" high x 17 7/8" wide x 7 1/2" deep. When the toolbox lid is closed, the drawers will not open, which is an added security feature. The top section of the toolbox is about 4" deep and offers space for larger tools that do not fit in the shallower drawers.
When the lid of the toolbox is open, it stands vertically on a hinge the runs the length of the cover. The toolbox also has a handle on the top for carrying. Two well-made latches secure the lid in place. A center hasp allows a padlock to additionally secure the toolbox if needed. (A padlock does not come with the Craftsman toolbox.)
My Dads Experiences
In the top of the toolbox, my father has a collection of varied tools such as clamps, a sharpening stone, and awl as well as the odd tools that tend to find their way into that compartment. The first drawer holds a variety of pliers and a large pouch containing a hollow set screw key assortment. The second drawer is used for wrenches and a 7-piece nut driver set. The third drawer holds lots of screwdrivers including phillips head, standard and even a combination offset screwdriver. In case you are wondering about the lack of hammers, my father has a separate toolbox for those.
My father likes the fact that when the lid of the tool chest is closed the drawers are locked and cannot be opened unless the lid is raised. Its also nice that the lid remains vertical when opened instead of flopping backward. The latches are easy to open and close, too.
This toolbox remains in the basement and does not travel beyond that point. Since this box only stands 12" tall, and my father prefers not to bend down to the floor to search for tools, he has arranged an ingenious method of holding the toolbox off the floor. My parents used to have freshwater aquariums, and while the aquarium tanks are long gone ... they still own the cast iron fish tank stands. This Craftsman toolbox sits very nicely atop the fish tank stand and keeps the toolbox at an easy-to-reach height. Best yet, the fish tank stand has a lower shelf where he keeps the other toolbox that houses his hammer collection.
Granted this toolbox does not travel beyond the basement, but it has seen a lot of use. My brother purchased this Craftsman toolbox for my father about ten years ago ... and the box looks great. No dents and I couldnt find any obvious scratches.

Summary
My father freely admits that this is his favorite toolbox. I asked him if he disliked anything about it, and all he could list were his likes. Sears is currently selling this Craftsman 3-Drawer Metal Toolbox for $49.99. My brother struck gold with this gift, and my father is happy having a safe place to store his tools.
