| awschon's Full Review: Cosco Nod-a-Way Toddler Bed 10-B01 |
Our son slept through the night from the time he was five weeks old until he reached one year. Then he wouldn't sleep at all, for some reason we could not determine. Although he had not tried to climb out of his crib, he had a terrible time when we went to put him down and he would grab the bars, rattle them and scream at the top of his lungs. That's when our pediatrician suggested a toddler bed. By then, he was fifteen months old and despite our worries that he might be a bit young for a toddler bed, we went shopping. We read numerous reviews for assorted beds, and our top pick was the Graco Cozy Bed. But no one carried it locally. So we found this bed and it's reviews seemed decent. It was on sale at our local Super K-Mart for $35 and we picked it up. Assembly took my husband less than half an hour.
It's a great bed. It's very attractive - looks like a little sleigh bed. It is made of molded white plastic that is: 1) very easy to keep clean, since you just wipe it down; 2) extremely durable; and 3) has no sharp edges for your little one to bump and cause injury. The mattress support is made of white metal and very little of the metal is exposed - it is all round anyway, with no sharp edges. It is not too heavy and not too light. So far, our son has not been able to push or move his bed - another little bonus, and a feature that parents who bought the Graco Cozy Bed had some dealings with when they found their toddlers could push the bed around the room beacuse it is all plastic and is so light.
Things to note about this bed. Like most toddler beds, the Cosco uses a standard crib mattress. Our son's mattress fits very snugly into the frame of this bed, which is great because he can't get any little body parts caught in the gap - there is no gap! Additionally, it is a toddler bed - made to support a toddler or child weighing up to 50 pounds. Mom and Dad, this means you cannot sit on the edge of the bed to tuck your child in at night. Nor can you sit on the bed at all. Just something you need to know. If your child likes for you to sit on the edge of the bed and read, you will definitely want to skip this bed (and most toddler beds) and head straight for a regular twin bed.
The Cosco bed also has guards built into it on each side to help little ones from falling out. With our son's mattress in and then a fairly flat pillow, these guards do not stick up extremely high, but they stick up high enough to protect our child, who is a little bit of a mover and shaker at night. The bed is also very low to the ground and our son can get in and out of it fairly easily - he is 32 inches tall, if that gives you a guide. He has fallen out of it once or twice when he was really moving around, and this is something that comes with moving your child out of the crib. But the fall was just a few inches and we solved this problem the first few weeks by putting a soft mat on the floor next to his bed until he became accustomed to sleeping in his toddler bed - in fact, the one or two times he fell out (when he climbed to the foot of the bed, away from the guards) he DIDN'T EVEN WAKE UP!
He also plays on his bed and has done a little romping on it - this bed holds up like a champ with an active toddler.
The bottom line on the Cosco bed is - if you are looking for a durable, fairly inexpensive toddler bed that is easy to keep clean and looks good, this is a bed you will definitely need to take a look at. As with all toddler beds, I recommend you look at it first hand and with a mattress in it, so you can make a determination for yourself whether it meets your needs. But it has certainly met our needs and exceeded our expectations. We couldn't have found a better bed for our child if we'd paid $350 dollars instead of $35. And our son loves his "big boy" bed - we added some Elmo sheets and now our son does much better at night, minus the crib bars!
