| mrhonda's Full Review: Comfort Inn Kokomo |
Back in June of 2006, my Mother and my Grandfather and I were traveling to Michigan and once we reached Indianapolis, we opted to take U.S. 31 north to the Michigan West Coast Lakefront where we were headed. By the time we reached Kokomo, Indiana, we had been driving for about 8 hours and decided to stop and have a nice dinner and rest for the night. There are lots of Hotel choices in Kokomo right along Route 31. My grandfather had traveled this road before and suggested that we try the Comfort Inn because he had stayed there before.
Now, this is not something I do very often because most of the time the pictures that Epinions gives aren't accurate, but take a look at the picture of the motel. The building with it's brown colored plain brick is just downright UGLY! I tend to stay away from places like this due to some bad experiences that I've had with smaller motels before. I was also all the more hesitant because we had stayed at a Westin the previous night! I would've been quick to pull in to the Hampton Inn or the Courtyard Marriott but I trusted my Grandfather's decision and this is where we stopped.
There was plenty of parking near the entrance. The main entrance was very plain and simple. It was a single door and not very wide. The desk was immediately inside and the lobby was very plain and simple with nothing noticable that stood out or the was memorable to me. Other than the desk, the lobby had a breakfast bar and same tables and chairs. Considering that we didn't have any reservations, we were checked-in in a timely manner by a friendly and helpful clerk. We got a walk-in rate of $45 for the night with a AAA discount. Since the rates were so low, we decided to get two rooms since there were 3 of us. That way nobody had to share a bed.
Just beyond the lobby was the first floor hallway. The Indoor Pool was located off of this hall way. As modest as this place was, I was impressed with the fact that there was an Indoor Pool and a Hot Tub. I even got a chance to try them out and I was impressed with the cleanliness of the Pool area and the nice warm temperature of the Pool. The motel even provided Pool towels.
Our rooms were on the second floor, and this motel has no elevator. Unfortunately, we had to carry our luggage up two flights of steps and my Grandfather who is past 80 had to climb the steps. We asked at check-in and all of the rooms on the first floor were full. I would imagine that they do fill up rather quickly. There were vending and ice machines of both floors which made it nice because I like to have a snack late at night.
The rooms themselves were very basic, but very clean. 2 double beds, a desk and chair, a dresser and TV, and a window, and that was about it. The bathroom was a little bit on the small side but it was fully stocked with plenty of towels, and soaps and shampoos. There was even a little note from the staff saying "We're glad you're here!" and saying to contact the desk if you needed any additional toiletries such as toothpaste, deodorant, etc. The beds and pillows were comfortable, but one thing that I noticed during the night is there is a lot of traffic noise from Route 31 seeing as how the building is close to the road, and 31 one of the main routes north from Indianapolis.
The next morning, we came downstairs for breakfast. On our way downstairs, a friendly maid greeted us with a cheerful "Goodmorning". The breakfast bar was stocked with fresh waffles and pastries, fresh fruit, eggs, yogurt, assorted cereals, coffee, tea, orange juice, and apple juice just to name a few. There were complimentary copies of USA Today and the local newspapers in the lobby, and I seem to remember the Wall Street Journal being there as well. There was also a small TV in the lobby with the morning news on it. It was all a nice way to start the morning and begin another long day of driving north.
Upon checkout, there were two clerks behind the desk this time and one was the same we had the night before. Either he worked a very long shift or was back in the next morning. They were both very polite and very timely in getting us checked out. As we exited to the parking lot, the maintenance man who was entering held the door for us and told us to have a nice day.
This may be one of the most modest motels that I have ever stayed in or that I write a review about but considering how friendly the staff is here, that really goes a long way. I've stayed in ultra-luxury hotels where the staff hasn't been as friendly. I was here very briefly and am not even all that familiar with the Kokomo area, but the next time I make this trip, I will definitely stay at this motel again.
