| Rosethyme's Full Review: Coeur de Lion 1977 Calvados Pays d' Auge |
Calvados is particular to France. One must try it when visiting the country. A few years ago, I spent a few days in France on business. During the course of this trip I first tried Calvados. Last year when my husband and I were in Paris, I sampled Calvados again. I am not certain what brand of Calvados I sampled but it certainly was expensive. Both times that I tried Calvados, it was served as an after dinner drink.
How to describe this spirit? It is a deep, rich, gold with very strong and aromatic scent, redolent of apples. It is served at room temperature in a medium-sized brandy snifter. (I remember it being very potent, so I asked for a little ice in the snifter, the bartender refused. He served it plain so as not to destroy the flavor.)
One swirls the snifter slightly to inhale the aroma, slowly takes a sip, rolls it on the tongue, and swallows. WOW! It is very strong, and warm on the tongue and throat. It takes my breathe away leaving behind an illusion of sun-warmed apples. Every sip is the same. The flavor is distinctive and sharp, reminiscent of crisp apples. After just a few sips, I began to feel warm, mellow, and relaxed. The perfect way to end a wonderful day.
