scubatromp's Full Review: Canon PIXMAâ„¢ iP6600D InkJet Photo Printer
My Epson 785EPX recently died so I need a replacement. I was very pleased with the quality of the photos my Epson delivered but suddenly the print heads stopped working properly which left extreme color distortion and bad vertical bars.
So I started researching my options for replacement. I didn't want to spend more than $200 max. I was seriously considering the Canon ip6000D, HP 8250 and the Epson 320. Seems all of those printers were highly respected and I don't think anyone could go wrong with any of those. Seems like many will tell you that the HP 8250 with its six ink tanks would use more ink than the ip6000d so I was leaning towards that one. But on Canon's web site it showed several new models on the horizon which were able to print down to a picoliter! I had been in Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Max, Office Depot and Compusa and none of those stores new anything about the new Canons. So my last stop was Staples and, to my surprise, they had a few of the new models in stock including the ip6200 and the ip6600d!
With it's 3.5 inch screen, 6 separate ink tanks, LED lights on the ink tanks... WOW! I snatched one up from Staples on the spot. Staples even honored a $25 off coupon I had from Circuit City. So I purchased the IP6600D for $175.
Quality of photos is great and better than my old Epson. I thought my Epson looked great but the Canon certainly outperforms the Epson.
The ink tanks are lit up with red LED light which is cool. If they're lit up, you have ink in the tanks. If not, no ink. This has nothing to do with performance, but it is pretty cool. :)
The 3.5 inch screen is great and you can print quality photos right from the printer without using the computer. was skeptical of this but it does work well.
The Easy Print software from Canon is just that; very easy to use. No complaints at all. Of course you'll get much more capability of out software like Photoshop etc.
The ip6600d has two paper trays which is very nice if you regularly use more than one size phot paper or print photos and color copies on regular paper. No mure suffling around.
Pictbridge USB port on the front works great if you have a pictbridge enabled camera.
The thing I like best is how quiet and fast the printer is. It is much faster and a lot more quiet than my Epson 785EPX.
I've used an off brand paper, Canon Photo Plus paper and Epson Glossy Photo paper and the quality looks great on all of them. I think the Epson and Canon have the edge over the off brand but even the off brand is acceptable.
Really, the only negatives are the size of the unit and the fact that it doesn't print direct to DVD/CD-R media. It is a bit larger maybe than some of the other competitors out there.
