sevry's Full Review: Canon CanoScan 3000ex Flatbed Scanner
Fry's was practically giving these away for under $50. I really only wanted sharp text scanning. I did try some color photos. The results were good, but only after descreening in Photoshop, and some other things. Certainly serviceable for photos. But I'm sure there are better.
It's difficult to knock a scanner that is so inexpensive. I've had sessions where I scanned hundreds of pages. Once I got into a rhythm, the scanner was almost continuously operating. It only 'hiccuped' once or twice. I shut it off, and started again. Been reliable, to date. I seem to recall that the rate was about 150pgs/hr, grayscale, 300dpi. The limitations were probably a) a preview time in excess of five seconds, b) a seek time that might have been one or two seconds too long, and c) a scan time that ideally would be half of what it was at 300dpi, and a fifth of what it was at 600dpi (which was far too slow).
A USB connection, of course. Couldn't be easier. I tend to just leave the power cord plugged in, because the scanner shuts itself off after a period.
Of course, obviously, the one thing I do wish is that it was faster. That's where you pay your money. More money, more speed. Also the software is a little weak. There's a cover panel for common settings. But I didn't want those. And using the scanning software ap directly forces you to respecify the page size and mode, for each scan. And while I don't so much quarrel with the page size, because that's something you might have to adjust for each page when placing by hand after you get the new preview image, I didn't like the idea that it forgets which mode it was using.
Scan your old family photos into your computer for safe-keeping, or for e-mailing to relatives. Copy a page from your notebook and use it in a report....More at eBay
