Imagine yourself as the ruler of a bare-bones settlement in the time of Caesar. It is up to you to plan how to construct, manage your resources, establish and maintain an economy, protect your settlement from crime and outside hostilities, and establish connections with other Roman cities. You only have the land upon which you're standing, and a purse full of gold from the Emperor--and should you squander it, you will risk execution. Add all that together with a tempermental, fickle population that's nearly impossible to please, and an Emperor who's demanding and even tougher to satisfy. Sound impossible, or exciting? It's both. This is Caesar III.
A strategy/simulation game set in Rome during the rule of Caesar, Caesar III is challenging and entertaining. There is no plot or storyline whatsoever, it's just build, build, build and manage, manage, manage. It is intensely difficult. I would honestly have to say it's one of the hardest games I've ever played. But, this is what kept me coming back for more!
Each mission Caesar sends you offers new opportunities in new regions, so there's very little chance of getting bored. One mission may be in an area flanked by water, where trade (via ships) and fishing are the key to survival. One mission may be in a barren rocky area, where mining for ore and fashioning weapons will prove the most lucrative economical decision. And another mission may be in an area that's naught but plains and fields, where farming for olives, fruit, and wheat will be the key to winning.
It's very tough to keep the population happy whilst building in such a manner to offer them everything they need--religion, medical care, access to food, access to water and baths, entertainment, etc. Fire and rot are constant enemies. As you progress, you will find you must build up an army and prepare to maneuver your troops into combat, as nearby barbarian tribes attempt to demolish and plunder your city.
The quality of your strategy will determine your level of success. Still, there are things you cannot possibly plan for--such as Caesar demanding goods to be dispatched immediately to Rome, or an unpredictable and moody god cursing your city with his or her mighty disfavour.
If you enjoy Roman history and strategy/simulation games, you will adore Caesar III. If your cup of tea is more plot-heavy RPGs or fast-paced FPS, you'll be bored to tears. But I can recommend Caesar III to anyone who's enjoyed SimCity or Civilisation, and certainly to anyone who's willing to spend hours at a time developing and maintaining his/her own little virtual city, against nearly unsurmountable odds.
