naphtalia's Full Review: Cadaco My First Magic Set by Cadaco
I am not usually a big fan of magic kits. Most try to have too much in them. Kids, with their short attention spans, spend just enough time to learn the secret to a trick, but not enough time to try it. Many kits these days come with props and instructions for 100s of tricks. That's too much at once. I often recommend to parents to give their child one trick at a time and to help them practice. Then you end up with lots of small gifts, and the child doesn't lose the pieces or get things mixed up. They might even practice one thing enough to learn it.
The Cadaco set - My First Magic Set, however, is a good one. It contains 10 tricks that are easy enough for youngster to do. The child will be engaged without being overwhelmed. Some of the other magic kits out there say for 8 and up, but can be too difficult for someone who is just 8.
This set has well written instructions. Children with reading skills will be able to work out most of the steps on their own. For those who don't read yet, parents will not be overwhelmed in trying to figure out what's being asked of them. They'll be able to make the trick work and teach it to the youngster.
Among the tricks here with which aspiring magicians can amaze are a drawer box - put a coin or small object into the box. Close the drawer. Do a little magic, open the drawer and the object disappears. Close the drawer again, do a bit more magic, open the drawer and the object reappears.
There is also a magician's wand with special properties to aid in some of the tricks, a ball vase and a couple of other tricks.
My only concern with this set is that many of the props are made out of paper and need to be punched out and assembled. This is not tough to do. The items should last if treated reasonably. I know too many children who would be careless for a moment and end up smashing a prop. Worse would be being impatient when punching items out and ending up with a torn prop. For this reason, I would strongly recommend insisting on having an adult help to get things set up.
There is enough here for the aspiring magician to do a show. The tricks are simple enough for little ones to accomplish and confounding enough that brothers and sisters will be entertained.
