| rodeo7's Full Review: Burton Snowboards Custom Free Binding |
The Burton Custom Freestyle bindings are not bad, but they could be better. The past few years, Burton seems to have been using past achievements rather than new developments and increased quality to sell their products.
I own a pair of `98/`99 Freestyles and my brother picked up a pair of the `99/`00 Freestyles. This year’s model is not much different than the ones we own. I found that the Freestyles were very sturdy, responsive, and my boot fit perfectly into them. The ratcheting system works well when locking down, but is tricky when trying to get out, especially when wearing cumbersome gloves or mitts. I have also heard reports that the ratchets break easily. The bindings are also not as easily adjusted as many of the other brands out there.
A very annoying problem my brother had was that whenever he unstrapped his back foot to walk to the lift, the straps would work the screws loose. We didn’t notice this problem until after the toe strap fell off on the slope.
All in all, the Custom Freestyle is a well-designed binding that I would trust being strapped into. Although good, there are other bindings within its price range that I would rather spend my money on for their more advanced construction and design.
