| jennfrank's Full Review: Burt's Bees Burts Bees Wild Lettuce Toner for Norm... |
Oh, toner. It's the part of a daily skincare regime that has the potential to leave your skin a crumbly, peeling wasteland. Fortunately (for me), a good toner can also repair the nightmare.
Why I Was At The Grocery Store Anyway
I've had one bad experience too many with a "skincare plan," and I was left a skeptic. When I purchased Burt's Bees Wild Lettuce Toner, it was out of sheer manic desperation: my skin had worsened, had become spotty and blotchy. I had painful cysts, and worst of all, my zits were all chapped and peeling. I actually cried.
Once I'd shoved my failed skincare products under the bed, I went to the grocery store. A friend had urged me to try Burt's Bees products, and she agreed to come along. After several minutes of staring at a shelf dumbfoundedly, I settled on Burt's Bees Wild Lettuce Toner. I was hesitant, because the bottle cited itself as being formulated for "Normal to Dry Skin," and I have good old-fashioned combination skin. Plus, $9 seemed like an awful lot to drop on toner. I mean, gosh, I've paid less. Still, I'd also paid more, both at cosmetics counters and on informercials. And like I said: I was desperate.
Presentation
Well, at $9, at least the bottle was something to look at. Frosted bottle, silver cap, simple logo: I felt like I was about to have a soda. I opened the bottle. The scent was a little strange but unintrusive. Still, the toner felt really good and cool on my skin. And after, I didn't have that weird "tightened," dried-out feeling.
(Toners are customarily applied with a cottonball twice daily, once in the morning and once at night. Ordinarily, this would have dried my skin out, but the formula was somehow mild enough to leave my skin soft.)
What I Love
Fast forward several weeks. Quite, quite apart from the fact that I do think the frosted bottle looks very nice, the dried-out patches all over my skin had already healed. The change was fast and striking. Now my skin is soft, more even-toned, and much less temperamental. I haven't had a bad blemish flare-up since I started using this toner.
In short, despite the "Normal to Dry Skin" annotation, Wild Lettuce Toner seems like the ideal choice for problematic, combination skin. It's terrific for sensitive skin, too.
What I Don't Love
Initially, that smell. It takes some getting-used-to. However, I must confess, I now rather like the smell in spite of myself. Call it a positive Pavlovian association: I now equate that pert hippie scent with all things fresh, clean, and dewy. Go figure.
