Pros: More control for styles and fly-aways than cremes and sprays
Cons: The feel of it in your hair can take some getting used to
The Bottom Line: A great styling product when you need more control than the average creme or spray, but it feels different and will require some experimentation to get it right
If you live in wicked winter climates, like I do up here in Milwaukee, then you know what a brutal beast this season can be on a 'do. Even when you keep your hair fairly natural most of the time as I do - no dyes, no perms, easy on the blow drying, etc. - one's hair can still quickly show signs of environmental punishments.
In addition to taking good care of your hair through the use of quality cleansing and conditioning products, and frequent trims or cuts, there are some products you can use that won't fix the damage that's been done, but might help you temporarily stop additional damage and make it look like the damage you have isn't as bad as it really is. Bumble and bumble Styling Wax is one of those products.
Only slightly scented, Styling Wax is available in a 1.5 ounce tin and is gooshy and sticky to the touch. Once you put it in your hands and rub it around, your body heat will give it a melted, greasy effect, allowing you to work it through your hair as you desire.
What I love about Styling Wax is its numerous applications. You can work it into your wet hair, for extra-thick hold with and protection against your blow dryer. You can use it on dry and styled hair to place and define certain strands (such as the ends of curls, spikes, or wisps), or finish and set a full-out style. You can also use it how I most frequently use it in the winter - to either smooth out and control the static and flyaway strands in a straight style, or hold the little wispy pieces in place when you pull your hair back (like in a ponytail).
However, even though it has so many different uses, Styling Wax does require some experimentation to learn how to use it right. It's a fairly powerful styling product so I can't say I've ever had an instance where I used too little, but I've definitely had cases where I've used too much and if you're trying to get out of the house in an instance like that, you're going to curse the day you discovered this shiny little tin because your only recourse is to jump in the shower and rewash your hair. Unlike many styling sprays and cremes, this stuff will not just comb out - you will have to wash it out.
For those of us who have dry hair issues and we chose not to shampoo our hair daily, Styling Wax can put a crimp in that plan because the morning after an application will make your hair look very dirty. If you can get away with that look every other day then I say go for it and leave it in - your hair will benefit from the protective properties that the coating of wax provides, as well as the infrequent washing. If you're like me and you can't sport that type of 'do to your job, then you'll have to either wash your hair, or limit your use to the weekends.
I love Styling Wax and I always have a tin on the stand-by among my Bumble and bumble products, but as much as I love it I just as strongly hate it, because no matter how good it makes my hair look, the feel of it on my head is just as equally bad. If you're like me and you take extra anal care of your hair, then you probably love the way it feels when it's clean, conditioned, soft 'n smooth. When I have Styling Wax in my hair I have to remember not to touch it, because it feels so greasy and chunky. My hair feels heavy against my head when I use it, and if my hair touches my face at all my face instantly feels like it's going to break out (it doesn't, of course, but I get that greasy high school acne feeling - bleh).
One last tip - if you do use this product daily, you might want to invest in a once-a-week cleansing shampoo, like Bumble and bumble's Sunday Shampoo. This will prevent any unnecessary buildup of this and any other styling products you use.
