| Helga17's Full Review: Breast Pads Dr. Brown's Washable Lace Nursing Pads... |
For the breast-feeding mother, nursing pads are important. They prevent embarrassing stains from popping up on shirts and also keep nipples from soaking in wet bras… which can cause thrush and other unpleasantness.
When I first bought pads, I bought some disposables and 3 different kinds of washable pads. I realized that the disposables would probably offer the most convenience, but prefer to not be so wasteful when possible. My instincts were right. The disposables are the easiest to use, soak up the most milk and are the most discreet under clothes. On the other hand, for the average day around the house I don’t mind saving both money and the environment by using the washable kind.
There were so many washables on the shelf and I had no clue which would be best, so I bought Gerber, Avanti and Dr. Brown’s. At $8 for a 4 pack of Dr. Browns nursing pads, they were the most expensive that I bought, but I have been by far the happiest with Dr. Brown’s.
Function These pads are a nice thickness and quite wide in diameter, which gives plenty of material for milk to soak into. The top layer is lace, so even if the pad becomes rather saturated, it doesn’t ever make it to the bra, so my bra and shirt both stay dry. Of the washables, these also do the best job of wicking the milk away from the layer right next to the skin, so you feel dryer longer.
Comfort and Appearance Because these have the widest diameter, the edge of the pads ends up being in places where my bra and shirts tend not to be so snug, which means they are less likely to be noticeable from the outside. The disposables I use are still a little more subtle, but these tend to look more like a padded bra than lumpy stuffing. (The Avanti look like lumpy stuffing.) They aren't completely invisible with all outfits, but they do better than even the disposables I've used.
Washability This package came with a little netted baggy for use in the washing machine. I suppose the baggy would make it less likely to lose a pad in a pant leg, but I haven’t used it. I just wash these with the rest of my laundry. At first, I always ran them with my delicates, but now I run them through any cycle I happen to be doing, and they come out as good as new. They don’t lose their shape at all. I also run these through the dryer without any problems.
Final Conclusions If I had it to do over again, I would buy only this brand of washable nursing pads. These work better than other brands and are very easy to maintain. While I don’t think any washable will ever be as effective as the disposables on the market, Dr. Brown’s comes close.
